Vodafone has just become the first UK mobile operator to switch-on a live 4G Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) site, which could help to cut the cost of building new networks by standardising the design and functionality of hardware and software. Separately they’ve also tested Universal Customer Premises Equipment (uCPE).

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that their much delayed auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands, which could boost new 5G mobile network coverage and mobile broadband speeds further into the Gigabit (1000Mbps+) territory, will not now take its first bids until January 2021.

At the start of this year the UK Government unveiled a £30m package to support an open competition (here), which aimed to look at how ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) could create “new opportunities in industries including film, TV, video games, logistics and tourism.” The winning projects have now been revealed.

UK ISP BT Business has today extended the availability of their converged HALO packages to include small business customers, which combines their “fibre broadband“, 4G unlimited mobile and digital phone line (app based) service into a single bundle from £42.95 +vat per month. There’s also a new Small Business Support Scheme.

BT has today published their Q1 2020/21 results, which reveals that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 5.81 million UK premises (up from 5.4m last quarter) and that includes 2.98m on FTTP (up from 2.57m) and 2.83m on G.fast (up from 2.81m). Plus 5G via EE is now live in 100 cities and towns.

Ofcom has today updated their advice to the UK Government on spectrum bands suitable for providing “trackside to train connectivity,” which adds the 39GHz band as a possible option. In the future this could be used to support on-board ultrafast broadband capable WiFi access points or mobile (4G, 5G) small cells for commuters.

Mobile and broadband ISP Vodafone UK have published their latest results to the end of June 2020 (financial Q1 FY21), which saw their fixed broadband base grow to total 793,000 customers (up by +42K in the quarter vs +64K in the previous quarter), while their mobile based declined to 17,580,000 (down by -462K).

The UK Government has today confirmed a series of changes to both the Electronic Communications Code (ECC) and Mobile infrastructure planning, which when taken together are intended to help boost the on-going deployment of both “gigabit-capable” broadband and 5G mobile networks (as well as the Shared Rural Network).

Yesterday’s debate on the forthcoming Agriculture Bill 2019-21 saw the House of Lords being told, by non-affiliated life peer Lord Holmes of Richmond, that some of the farmers he knows have such poor access to internet connectivity that they “have to go to McDonald’s to get broadband coverage.“

Customers of Vodafone’s 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services may like to know that the operator has just added content from Amazon Prime and YouTube Premium to their service, which means that Pay Monthly customers can optionally add them to their “Entertainment” plans as part of a single bill.

The Government of Jersey (English Channel Island) has signalled that it intends to “align” its approach to the deployment of 5G mobile technology with that of the UK, which effectively means banning the use of “high risk” vendors such as the Chinese firm Huawei and ZTE. Guernsey has echoed this.

Mobile operator Three UK still appears to be slowly dragging its feet over the proposed addition of eSIM support to their 4G and 5G network, which is despite last December pledging to launch customer trials “within the next few months.” We’re still waiting, but it may now launch around the start of autumn.

The UK Government has today confirmed a dramatic U-turn, which means that new core and non-core 5G kit from Chinese tech giant Huawei will be banned from use in mobile networks from 31st December 2020. But existing kit will get until 2027 for removal and a decision on FTTP broadband ISPs will come later.

Senior broadband and mobile figures from UK telecoms giants BT and Vodafone have today warned cross-party MPs on the Science and Technology Committee that they’d need at least 5-7 years to fully remove Huawei’s kit from their networks, or “blackouts” could be a risk. The cost may also rise into the billions.

Mobile operator Vodafone today claims to have become “the first UK operator” to showcase the next evolution of gigabit-capable 5G (mobile broadband) technology – “Standalone 5G” (SA), which includes support for improvements like ultra-low latency, “guaranteed speed performance” and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Vodafone has published a new report from WPI Economics, which perhaps predictably forecasts that the cumulative gains of UK businesses moving from 4G to 5G (mobile broadband) could produce an economic boost of more than £38bn by 2025, plus £120bn between 2025 to 2030 (total productivity-based boost of £158bn).
