Street Works UK (SWUK), which is a Trade Association that represents utilities and their contractors on street works issues, has published a new report that helps to highlight some of the barriers that civil engineers are facing as they attempt to upgrade the nation’s water, sewage, gas, electricity and broadband ISP infrastructure.

Information supplied by BT has revealed that customers on their core fixed broadband ISP network (including Consumer, Enterprise and EE) consumed a total of 141PB (PetaBytes) of internet data on Boxing Day 2022, which is up by 17.5% from 120PB on the same day in 2021.

Satellite operator Iridium and chipmaker Qualcomm have joined forces to add satellite-based “messaging and emergency services” access to premium Android powered Smartphones in the second half of 2023, which will enable them to compete with rival solutions like the Apple iPhone’s new Emergency SOS via Satellite (here).

Suffice to say, there’s been a huge performance jump between 2021 and 2022.

Mobile operator Three UK has today followed the earlier announcements from EE and Vodafone by confirming that their 4G (mobile broadband) network is also now live across six new stations on the London Underground (tube) network (here), covering parts of both the Central and Northern lines.

Connect and Umlaut have today published their annual UK Mobile Network Test study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 4G (voice and data / broadband) and 5G service performance across 19 cities, 40 towns and along over 10,000km of major roads. Overall, EE managed to come top again.

Broadband and mobile operators EE (BT) and Vodafone have announced that they’ve extended their 4G network on the London Underground to include six more stations, covering parts of the Central and Northern lines, which reflects a partnership with BAI Communications. This builds on their already live coverage on the eastern half of the Jubilee Line.

Mobile giant EE (BT) has officially become the first operator to make use of Freshwave‘s deployment of a new small cell based outdoor 4G and 5G mobile network in the central City of London area, which is currently in the pilot phase. O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone are expected to follow.

BT Wholesale – supported by EE and Three UK – is conducting a new “state-of-the-art” 5G (mobile broadband) technology trial in Leeds, where they’re deploying a Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) that in future could be installed as individual street works or fitted in existing street-furniture (e.g. lampposts) to extend the signal.

Contract-free UK mobile operator VOXI, a sub-brand of Vodafone, has today launched a new “Winter Sale“, which doubles the 4G and 5G data (mobile broadband) allowances across all of their mobile plans and reduces the monthly price of their top unlimited data package.

Ofcom has published their Connection Nations 2022 UK digital infrastructure report, which reveals that “gigabit-capable” broadband ISP networks cover 70% of the UK (21 million premises), which is up from 47%  last year, and outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 67-77% of premises (up from 42-57%).

Customers who take UK ISP Sky Broadband’s cheaper “Basics” social tariff for home broadband and phone connectivity will now also gain the ability to add Sky’s new mobile social tariff, which will provide existing users with unlimited UK calls and texts and 3GB of data per month for 12 months “at no cost at all“.

Three UK SRN 4G Rural Site Build

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that they’ve started construction of the UK’s first joint mast site in Scotland under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which is expected to go live in early 2023 and supply 4G (mobile broadband) connectivity to customers on the Isle of Mull.

Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has issued a general progress update on their various mobile and broadband ISP network upgrades, investment, and digital inclusion initiatives across Yorkshire in England, which among other things also confirms that Skipton (North Yorkshire) is the home of their first XGS-PON (FTTP) trial users.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has today handed out £28m to three universities (York, Bristol and Surrey) to help them team-up with major telecoms companies, including Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung, to both design and build future 6G based mobile broadband networks.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has this morning announced that their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network is now being deployed to cover a further five airports, such as the George Best Airport in Belfast and Newcastle International Airport. All were installed by Exchange Communications.

The Director-General of the BBC, Tim Davie, has given broadband ISPs and mobile operators something extra to think about after he proposed that the corporation could plan to “switch-off” terrestrial TV and radio signals by the end of 2030. In their place, the broadcaster would focus on online content and streaming (e.g. iPlayer).
