Vodafone UK Says it’s Unable to Offer Free BBC Bitesize Access

Mobile operator Vodafone has said that they won’t be following EE’s (inc. Plusnet and BT) lead by offering free data (mobile broadband) access to BBC Bitesize (education) content during the latest COVID-19 lockdown because it is “not possible,” at least not without applying the same rule to the whole of the BBC’s UK website.

The trade association for UK mobile operators, Mobile UK, has warned that calls for the 5G rollout to be delayed on health grounds are “without merit“. The commentary comes after Professor John William Frank (University of Edinburgh) alleged that the transmitter density required for 5G may be “potentially harmful to health.”

EE Mobile UK Extend Free Unlimited Data Offer for NHS Again

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that their offer of free unlimited data (mobile broadband) to customers who work for the National Health Service (NHS), which was due to expire on 31st January 2021, is to be extended again until June 2021 due to the on-going COVID-19 crisis.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network has now started to go live in the busiest parts of a further 13 towns and cities across the United Kingdom, which includes locations such as Halifax, Leamington Spa and St Albans.

Mobile operator O2 UK has today announced that their new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network has now gone live across a total of over 150 UK towns and cities (up from 108 in October and 60 in June 2020), which includes new locations like Bournemouth, Cheltenham, Doncaster and Southampton.

Australia Sets New Distance Record for 1Gbps Speed via 5G mmW UPDATE

The nbn™ Fixed Wireless network in Australia has just set what appears to be a new “world record” after it reached a broadband speed of “close” to 1Gbps (1000Mbps) via 5G mobile technology in a millimetre-wave (mmWave) band, using about 400MHz of spectrum bandwidth, over a distance of 7.3km.

9 New 5G Tech and OpenRAN Trials Secure £28m of UK Funding

The Government has unveiled an additional nine UK technology trials under the 5G Create scheme, which reflects a total investment of £28.3m to help test various new 5G based broadband and wireless technologies and use cases. Mobile customers of BT, Plusnet and EE have today been told that the operators will remove mobile data (mobile broadband) charges for BBC Bitesize content by the end of January 2021. The move forms part of BT’s new “Lockdown Learning” scheme (here), which was kicked off last week to help struggling school children.

PAC Warns UK Gov Failures Mean Rural Gigabit Broadband Delays

A new report from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has identified a “litany” of failures in the Government’s (DCMS) £5bn Gigabit Broadband Programme (F20), which it warns will result in “business and homes in rural areas” being “locked out of gigabit broadband for years to come.”

Unsurprisingly, they found significant concerns with deliverability.
