O2 UK Deploys 4G and 5G Freshwave Small Cells to 13 Sites in Cornwall

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today continued to boost the provider’s 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) capacity and coverage by deploying Freshwave’s small cells across 13 holiday resort locations in Cornwall (South West England). Most of these are being deployed across the towns of St Ives and Newquay.

Mobile provider giffgaff, which is owned by Telefónica and harnesses O2’s virtual network operator (MVNO) platform in the UK, has today launched a new mobile plan specifically for students that offers them 100GB (GigaBytes) of mobile broadband data for just £10 per month on a 12-month term.

Virgin Media O2 Expand UK 3G Mobile Switch Off to Watford

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that customers in the large Hertfordshire (England) town and borough of Watford will be the next UK location to go through their 3G mobile (broadband) switch-off programme on 17th September 2025. This follows completed withdrawals in Durham, Norwich, Telford, Guildford and Torquay.

Government Funded 4G Mobile Mast Upgrades Go Live in Yorkshire Dales

The UK Government has this morning revealed that a total of 58 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. The most recent additions have occurred around the North Yorkshire town of Hawes – also impacting Hardraw, Appersett, Snaizeholme and Sedbusk.

Virgin Media O2 Grow UK FTTP Premises by 114k in Q2 as Broadband Users Fall

The latest Q2 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 today have revealed that their gigabit broadband network increased by 114,900 premises in the quarter to cover 18.53 million UK homes. But related customers suffered another fall to total 5,643,500 (down by -51.4k in Q2 vs -44k in Q1) and O2’s mobile base also suffered a fall (albeit with positive results in wholesale).

O2 UK Boost 4G and 5G Mobile at 700 Postcodes in Dundee, Scotland

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the network capacity and coverage of their 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) services around a total of 700 postcodes across the coastal Scottish city of Dundee on the Firth of Tay estuary.

Giffgaff UK Launches New Travel Data Add Ons for Mobile Roaming

Broadband and mobile operator Vodafone has published their first combined Q1 FY26 financial results with Three UK. The figures show that the merged entity has 1.654 million fixed broadband customers (up by 44k in Q1 vs 61k in the previous quarter) and a huge combined mobile base of 28.765m – making them the “biggest mobile network operator in the UK“.

BT See Loss of 169k Openreach UK Broadband Lines and Appoints New CFO

Telecoms giant BT Group just published a short trading update to the end June 2025 (Q1 FY26), which reveals that Openreach lost another 169,000 total broadband lines to rival networks over the past quarter (down from 243k in the previous quarter). But they also saw their “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage grow to over 19 million premises (up by 1m) and take-up increased to 37% (up from 36.13%).

Mobile Operator Spusu UK Cuts International Data Roaming Charges

The SIM-Only mobile provider spusu, which holds a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement via BTWholesale to harness EE’s national 4G and 5G network, has today announced “sweeping cuts” to their international data (mobile broadband) roaming charges across 150 countries and slashing rates by at least 50% in over 100 of those.

Most MPs Expect UK to Miss Targets for 5G Mobile and Gigabit Broadband

A new survey of 108 Members of Parliament, which was conducted by consultancy firm Cluttons and polling company YouGov, has revealed that only 34% of MPs currently believe the UK will achieve the government’s target of delivering Standalone 5G (5GSA) mobile coverage to all populated areas by 2030. The figure drops even lower for the gigabit broadband target.

EE’s 5G Standalone Mobile Network to Cover Half of the UK as 45 New Areas Go Live

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has this morning announced that their latest 5G Standalone (5GSA) mobile network will, from the end of August 2025, be able to reach over half of the entire UK population (more than 34 million people) as more than 45 new UK locations go live. The figure is up from 40% coverage in March 2025.

Gov Prep New Statement of Strategic Priorities for UK Broadband and Mobile

The UK government has today proposed a new Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP) for UK mobile and broadband services. This broadly requires Ofcom to deliver on existing targets, ensure a smooth copper to fibre network migration, monitor take-up of gigabit-capable broadband, distribute radio spectrum fairly and facilitate infrastructure sharing etc.

The UK telecoms regulator has today launched a new ‘Call for Input‘ to help it decide on the future of the 2GHz radio spectrum band (1980-2010MHz and 2170-2200MHz), which could potentially open it up to wider use for providing broadband connectivity to aircraft and drones, direct-to-device services (4G/5G mobile), and or IoT etc.
