Openreach (BT) hope to publish a final reference offer for their new Dark Fibre Access (DFA) product by the end of 2016, which will give rival ISPs “physical access” to their fibre optic cables. But a recent progress update reveals that disagreements over contracts, repair times and fees have yet to be resolved.

The Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) has announced that a new deal will result in more than 15,000 extra homes and businesses around the North East of England being put within reach of a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable network by the end of 2018.

The latest quarterly (Q3 2016 calendar) results have been published by BT today, which reveal that their retail broadband base now tops 9,193,000 customers (up by +76K, unchanged from Q2) and 4,473,000 of those take their ‘Infinity‘ (FTTC/P) superfast broadband (up by +216K vs +181K in Q2).

After a long wait Openreach (BT) has today revealed the tentative wholesale cost of their new ‘up to’ 330Mbps capable G.fast broadband technology for UK homes and businesses, which from January 2017 will be piloted in 17 locations across the country (reaching 138,000 UK premises by the end of March 2017).

Residents of a rural village in North Yorkshire (England), Cowling, have complained about the “fiasco” of Openreach’s (BT) response after some were left without broadband connectivity for around 2-3 weeks, which started when a car crashed into one of the operator’s local FTTC cabinets.

Engineers working for Network Rail have damaged a mass of BTOpenreach’s cable ducts near Uxbridge (West London) because they “were not highlighted in the thorough surveys we carried out prior to the work.” As a result broadband and phone services in the area, including West Drayton, are suffering a major outage.

The International Telecommunication Union, specifically ITU-T Study Group 15, has doubled the best speeds achievable via the new G.fast broadband standard to 2Gbps and added support for coaxial cable. Openreach (BT) are due to begin the commercial UK roll-out of this service in late 2017.

Openreach (BT) and Huawei have today claimed to be the “first companies in Europe” to trial three new ultrafast fibre optic broadband technologies, including 40Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable NG-PON2, 10Gbps XGS-PON and 2.5Gbps GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) over a single fibre.

A new trial of the future XG.FAST technology, which could one day replace Openreach’s forthcoming G.fast based ultrafast broadband service, has beaten last year’s BT trial by pushing a peak aggregate speed of 8000Mbps over 30 metres of twisted-pair copper (BT achieved 5.6Gbps at a similar distance).

A new BT commissioned report from Analysys Mason has perhaps unsurprisingly warned that Ofcom’s effort to encourage alternative network (AltNet) ISPs to build rival ultrafast broadband networks, such as by opening up access to Openreach’s cable ducts, may fail to achieve the desired result.

Openreach (BT) has announced some enhancements and an extension of their new 18Mbps (2Mbps upload) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based product trial, which began in July 2016 (here) and is designed to help people stuck on slow ADSL based pure copper broadband lines.
