BT has said that the Government can avoid imposing a tricky industry levy on ISPs or using public funding to help pay for the proposed 10Mbps broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO) because they’ll take the full responsibility, as well as pushing superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 97-98% of the UK.

Israel-based Sckipio, which helped to create some of the kit that BT has used in their UK trials of 330Mbps capable hybrid-fibre G.fast (ITU G.9700/9701) broadband (roll-out plan), has today launched three new technologies that they hope will make the connectivity method more useful.

The £1.56m state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK pilot of a new superfast fixed wireless broadband network, which was built by Airwave in North Yorkshire (England), appears to have run into an overbuilding conflict with BT’s (Openreach) roll-out of FTTC based “fibre broadband” services.

Openreach (BT) will today make a small update to their ‘When can I get fibre?‘ broadband coverage checker, which should offer a bit of extra detail about the availability of “ultrafast” 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) technology. But the change will only work for locations in Wales.

Sky’s (Sky Broadband) CFO and COO, Andrew Griffith, has today warned that the UK is at “serious risk of falling behind” other countries in the broadband league table, unless Ofcom splits Openreach from BT. Meanwhile BT’s CEO, Gavin Patterson, once again accused rivals of making “inaccurate claims” and “gaming the regulator to secure commercial advantage.”

Openreach (BT) has today reminded people that they don’t just roll-out their 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network in urban areas and have now connected around 70 communities in North Yorkshire to the service (reflecting 7,800+ premises), many of which are rural.

Good news for anybody likely to be taking part in Openreach’s (BT) forthcoming trial of the new “Long Reach VDSL” (FTTC) broadband technology, you can expect to receive the service free for up to 2 years. Plus there’s an indication that the top download speed might be boosted up to 55Mbps.

The rural community of Cotwalton in Staffordshire (England) has become the latest to help pay for an “ultrafast” (330Mbps) FTTP broadband upgrade through BT’s existing Community Fibre Partnerships scheme, but the twist is that it’s also the first one to be combined with public funding.

The CEO of Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, has today given a progress update on their plans to improve national broadband connectivity. Few things are more frustrating than finding out that you can’t get the latest 40-80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband service installed because the local Openreach (BT) Street Cabinet is full to capacity, which can sometimes result in a lengthy wait for an upgrade.
