BT Claims Future G.fast Broadband Delivers 300Mbps Speeds at 350 Metres

The CTO of BT’s Wholesale division, Colin Bannon, has revealed that their future G.fast (ITU G.9701) broadband technology has also been tested on longer copper lines of 350 metres and the operator found that at this distance it was still able to deliver Internet speeds of 300Mbps.

A tiny rural civil parish village called Claverton in Somerset, which is home to around 115 people (70 homes) and resides near Bath in England, has apparently become the first such UK village to privately co-fund with BT to build a completely new “fibre broadband” (FTTC) network.

In the future when one of BTOpenreach’s engineers pops around to investigate a fault (SFI2) or boost your broadband connection then they may now also access your ISP supplied router in order to interrogate the data it holds and hopefully highlight or reduce the occurrence of repeated faults (especially early life failures on new lines).

In a surprise move Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review (BCMR2016) has done a U-turn on its 2012 policy by proposing that rival ISPs, specifically those that provide Leased Lines, should be granted access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network (i.e. un-lit fibre optic lines that have spare capacity for coping with future demand).

The national UK telecoms operator, BT, has today published the latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar) and confirmed that their retail business added +121,000 new broadband subscribers in the quarter (up from +119k in Q4 2014) to total 7,713,000, which includes 3,010,000 on BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +266k vs +209k in Q4 2014).
