BT Leaves Surrey UK Village for 10 Weeks Without Broadband and Phone

It’s well known that significant cable damage in rural areas can sometimes take significantly longer for BTOpenreach’s engineers to fix than in busy urban locations, where more people will feel the pain. Sadly this appears to be the case for 40 homes in the village of Wonersh, but the bigger issue is now one of compensation.

BTOpenreach has set a trial date for the ability to order a naked superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC / VDSL) service, which means you could take the broadband without also having to pay a separate fee for the phone line rental (aka – Naked VDSL, Single Order GEA-FTTC or SoGEA). There’s also a small update on VDSL Amplifiers and Vectoring.

BT Extends “Fibre Broadband” Rollout Contract with Emtelle to 2019

In an unsurprising move BT has agreed to extend their contract with the Scotland-based Emtelle Group, which manufactures cable duct (plastic piping that encases underground fibre optic cables) as well as sub-duct and blown fibre products at its two plants in Hawick and Jedburgh, for another four years until 2019.

UPD3 Latency Woe as BT Deploy Physical Retransmission on FTTC Broadband

Earlier this year BTOpenreach confirmed (here) that they were deploying Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP – ITU G.998.4) technology to improve the performance of their ‘up to’ 40-80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines. But at least one ISP has noticed that this is also increasing latency times by around 15ms (miliseconds) and in other cases a loss of speed is observed on some lines.

The £35m+ Superfast Surrey project in England has announced the completion of its main deployment phase, which means that an additional 82,000 homes and businesses in the county can now gain access to BTOpenreach’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network; albeit a few months later than originally planned (end of 2014).

Telecoms giant BT has today reported that their joint £132m Superfast Cornwall project with the EU, which has already deployed the operators “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to cover around 95% of local premises (including the Isles of Scilly), has seen strong uptake by local premises with 60,000 subscribers choosing to adopt it.

Rural Norfolk Village Complains of BT’s Falling Broadband Speeds

Representatives of a small rural village in East Norfolk (England), Wiveton, have spoken to ISPreview.co.uk about their frustration after local broadband download speeds collapsed from around 6Mbps at Christmas to less than 2Mbps now. Some are even suffering speeds as low as 39Kbps and this includes a few living just yards from the exchange.

An apparently small number of Openreach’s VDSL (FTTC) “fibre broadband” modem users are being sent replacement white power adaptors (HW-120100B12W) after a “manufacturing fault” allegedly meant that a component inside the old black PSU adapter plug (FM120007-UK) might “fail and break the casing“.

Cumbria UK Council Agree £5.6m Expanded Superfast Broadband Rollout

The Cumbria County Council has approved an additional public funding boost of £5.6m in order to expand the coverage of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) from the current target of 93% by 2015 to 95% by 2017. The contract will now go out to tender, although BT looks certain to win it.

BT has launched another trial of their VDSL2 based ‘up to’ 80Mbps Wireless-to-the-Cabinet (WTTC) broadband technology, this time via the small village of Westow that sits on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors in England.
