BT has officially signed the £45 million Connecting Cambridgeshire contract, which aims to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services available to 90% of homes and businesses across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (England, UK) by the end of 2015 (i.e. 98% will get FTTC but the 8% difference will be sub-25Mbps).

BTOpenreach, which takes care of BT’s national telecoms network in the United Kingdom, has today announced the recruitment of a further 1,000 new engineers to help with the on-going roll-out of superfast broadband (FTTC, FTTP) and phone services into customers’ homes.

The CTO and Co-Founder of business ISP Timico UK, Trefor Davies, has called for a “total network rollout” of true fibre optic broadband (FTTP) services after highlighting how corrosion on his copper BT telecoms line had caused a recently installed FTTC service to drop from an average speed of 53Mbps to just 6Mbps (Megabits).

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national telecoms network, has announced that their recent technical trial of the forthcoming 220Mbps (20Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP product has gone without a hitch. The full pilot will now begin on 1st March 2013 as planned.

The Welsh Government has today announced the first 8 locations to benefit from its part publicly funded £425m roll-out of superfast broadband ISP services across Wales (UK), which initially aims to make internet download speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of 2015.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s telecoms network across the United Kingdom, has issued a new Do’s and Don’ts List that advises its engineers to “remain neutral” when asked about ISPs and not to recommend BT’s own retail broadband products (BTInfinity etc.). It also tells them to give people a chance to reach the door when they visit.

BT Wholesale’s latest price list update reveals that the operators forthcoming and “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) capable FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD) broadband ISP service, which will be available to FTTC capable UK lines from spring 2013, could attract Excess Construction Charges (ECC) of over £3,000.

BTWholesale, the wholesale division of national UK telecoms operator BT, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that its up to 20Mbps (ADSL2+) capable 21CN based Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) platform will be extended beyond their current targets and into more rural areas to reach over 92% of the country.

The Institute of Directors, an organisation for EU business leaders, polled 1,147 of its members to reveal that faster broadband could improve productivity at 83% of companies, encourage 31% to invest more in their business and cause 15% of firms to hire more staff. But it also criticised BTOpenreach in the UK for low service satisfaction levels.

The Metropolitan Police have jailed two adult men for stealing a “large quantity” of BT’s copper telephone cable while they posed as local workmen, which resulted in a total loss of fixed line broadband ISP and phone services to hundreds of premises in Teddington and Sussex (England) during May 2012.

National UK telecoms operator BT has today announced a final list of 99 telephone exchanges that will soon be able to receive its latest 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) or “ultra-fast” 330Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based superfast broadband ISP products through their commercial roll-out.

The £132m Superfast Cornwall scheme, which aims to roll-out fibre optic based broadband (FTTC etc.) ISP services to “at least” 80% of homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014, has achieved a “major milestone” after it became available to around 125,000 Cornish premises (i.e. 50% coverage).

BT has unsurprisingly been chosen by the joint Cambridgeshire and Peterborough project in England (UK) to help make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to 90% of local premises by 2015 (note: “very nearly” 100% will also get speeds of at least 2Mbps by the same date).

The South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) and Wiltshire Council (WC) have today become the latest to sign a new £35.6m contract with BT that will make superfast broadband ISP speeds (25Mbps+) available to 94% of local homes and businesses by the end of March 2016 (the rest will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

BTOpenreach has announced plans to conduct a proof of concept trial for its new small cell based Mobile Infill Solution. The service aims to leverage BT’s existing fixed line UK telecoms network to provide mobile services into parts of the country that suffer from “non-existent or patchy” coverage (i.e. “rural areas“).
