The latest UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2023 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 60.54% of premises (up from 52.77% in H1 2023) and 79.86% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 76.22%). Openreach (BT) has announced that they’ve managed to bring their gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to the remote Fair Isle, which is a tiny island that sits around halfway between Shetland and the Orkney islands (Scotland) – the longest distance (100km) they’ve been able to transmit a continuous fibre signal anywhere in the UK.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just announced the second batch of annual price increases, albeit this time focused more on their wholesale Ethernet (EAD, EBD etc.), OSA, Excess Construction Charges (ECC), Dark Fibre and Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) products for UK ISPs, businesses and other networks.

The latest Connection Nations 2023 UK digital infrastructure report has today been published by Ofcom, which finds that “gigabit-capable broadband” ISP networks now cover 78% of the UK (up from 70% in 2022), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 85-93% of premises (up from 67-77%).

A meeting in the House of Commons was held yesterday that saw MPs from different parties debate the forthcoming withdrawal of BT and Openreach’s old copper-based analogue line networks (PSTN phones and WLR) by Dec 2025, which touched on a variety of issues from battery backup to problems with the reliability of digital replacements.

A new report from business broadband ISP and communications provider Gamma and the Centre of Economics Business Research (CEBR) has claimed that 29% of UK businesses are still “completely unaware” of the upcoming move to switch-off the old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in December 2025.

Openreach has today revealed that their £57m state aid supported Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contracts with the Welsh Government (WG), which required them to extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to 39,000 extra premises in rural Wales, ultimately delivered 44,000 and came in under budget.

Rochdale-based ISP Zen Internet has revealed that they’ve finally completed their exchange rollout (unbundling) programme, which means that over 80% of the United Kingdom should now be within reach of their cheaper on-net based Ethernet (leased lines) and broadband products (e.g. FTTP).

The first 100 homes and businesses on the remote rural Hebridean isle of Jura in Scotland can now access Openreach’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. The development was partly funded by gigabit broadband vouchers from the UK and Scottish governments, which offer subsidies worth up to £5,000 per property.

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) in England has issued a progress update on their ongoing £7m project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.), which reveals that 171 of the sites have been completed, while a further 22 sites are now due to be upgraded by 2024.
