25th February, 2021 (3 Comments)

The latest independent H2 2020 study of broadband coverage in UK new build homes has indicated that 88.5% of houses constructed last year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 87.3% in H1 2020), which rises to 97.7% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (unchanged).

Customers on various Openreach based UK broadband ISPs (e.g Sky Broadband, BT, TalkTalk etc.) in parts of Glasgow (Scotland) have been left without internet and VoIP (digital phone) connectivity today after a “power incident” (fault) hit the Bridgeton exchange last night, which could take a while to fully resolve.

Network capacity problems come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, but the case of one street in London shows that those looking to order Openreach’s swanky new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service may sometimes also run into an issue with there being no space for new lines on local poles.

The Broadband Forum has published a new technical report (TR-419), which proposes a different way for “full fibre” (FTTP) builders to cut their deployment costs via a Fibre-to-the-extension-point (FTTep) approach. In short, it’s another way of cutting out the need to replace the last few metres of copper with fibre.

The Communications Workers Union has announced that 170 of Openreach’s Repayment Project Engineers (RPE) are set to go on a 48 hour strike in two weeks’ time after the two sides failed to reach an agreement over the imposition of grading changes, which might affect areas like salaries, holidays and terms for newcomers.

Last year saw Openreach (BT) select ADTRAN’s Software-Defined (SD) Fibre Access Platform to help support the rollout of their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network (here), making them the operator’s 3rd strategic supplier. Today the first live subscriber has been connected via this platform.

As expected the UK telecoms regulator has today published detailed proposals for a new simpler “one touch” switching process for all broadband customers, which from December 2022 will make it easier for consumers to switch between ISPs on physically separate networks (e.g. Openreach’s full fibre to Cityfibre or Virgin Media etc.).

A new survey has warned that 24% of UK businesses (33% for SMEs) aren’t aware of the plan to withdraw traditional copper line phone services (PSTN – WLR, LLU SMPF etc.) by December 2025, which will see both homes and businesses being migrated over to a modern all-IP based network for broadband and voice connectivity.

Three of Openreach’s street cabinets, and an unrelated mobile phone mast in Chelmsford (Essex), have been seriously damaged after arsonists attacked them this morning, which has sadly left almost 3,000 premises (homes and businesses) without access to either broadband or phone connectivity during a pandemic!

Openreach (BT) has faced some criticism after it sent a letter to one or more of Northern Ireland’s (NI) local authorities, which appeared to suggest that the operator would have provided FTTP broadband to more premises than the winner of the £165m Project Stratum contract, had they won it instead.

30th January, 2021 (12 Comments)

Openreach (BT) plan to increase the wholesale price of their strongest maintenance level across almost all of their broadband and phone products (WLR, LLU, SOGEA and FTTC/P) for UK ISPs, although the change will mainly affect ISPs selling business packages with a stronger commitment to fault repairs.
