At a significant cost – around £4,000 per premises – Openreach (BT) and the £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project have today announced that they’ve deployed their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to several tiny Outer Hebrides (Na h-Eileanan an Iar) communities.

The on-going delay to the Scottish Government’s proposed £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project, which originally aimed to cover the whole of Scotland with 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” by the end of 2021, has now stalled the digital element of the proposed Inverness and Highland City-Region deal.

One of the most common questions to grace our inbox centres around the still evident confusion over ISP choice on Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” network, which usually occurs once people realise that it’s not available (yet) from most of their usual haunts.

A few customers with G.fast based hybrid fibre “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP lines have this week noticed a modest boost to their download speeds after a resync, which appears as if it could be associated to an interesting change with the operator’s spectrum frequency allocation (band plan) for the service.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that their new Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SOGEA / SOGFast) product, which enables consumers to buy a standalone FTTC “fibre broadband” (VDSL2 or G.fast) line from an ISP without the voice (phone) service, has now entered Early Market Deployment and published revised prices.

The state aid supported Better Broadband for Oxfordshire (BBO) partnership, which has worked with Openreach (BT) and Building Digital UK to extend the reach of FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to pass 97% of local premises, has just launched a new coverage map tool.

The Dumfries & Galloway Police have confirmed that a fire, which midday yesterday burned down BT’s Auchenmalg exchange in Scotland, also knocked out telephones, broadband (ADSL but not FTTC) and prevented fixed line calls to emergency services for those in the surrounding area. It could take “several days” to fix.

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project, which has been working with BT (Openreach) to rollout “superfast broadband” to poorly served areas, is to extend Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) UK ISP technology to cover a further 6,000 premises thanks to a reinvestment of £17.8m.

The Leicestershire County Council has today announced a £2.7 million extension to their existing Superfast Leicestershire project with Openreach (BT), which means that “thousands” of extra homes and businesses will soon gain access to a Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP network.

The MSP for Orkney, Liam McArthur (LibDem), has called on the Scottish Government’s Connectivity Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, to come clean with regards to whether or not they have now “quietly abandoned” the target to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) available to all of Scotland by the end of 2021 (March 2022 financial).

The Superfast Essex (SFE) project has begun informing rural residents in poorly served areas that completion of Gigaclear’s Phase 3 and Phase 4a contracts to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network have been delayed yet again, with completion being pushed from July 2020 to December 2021.

Openreach (BT) appears to be running a 6 month special offer for UK ISPs using Managed Engineer Installs for their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband service, which will start on 10th September 2019 and run until 10th March 2020.

BT Group has today continued to restructure its operations by selling their BT Fleet division, which owns and manages many of the vehicles used by Openreach and various other companies (e.g. the AA, EDF and National Grid), to AURELIUS Equity Opportunities SE & Co. KGaA for an undisclosed sum.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has revealed how Openreach anticipates that reaching the final 10% of UK premises with 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology is likely to require an “outlay of around £4,000 each to pass” (vs build costs of £300-£400 for the first 50% of premises).
