Openreach Refund £14m to UK ISPs for Underpaying Compensation

Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that a mistake in compensation payments (forms part of a Service Level Guarantee) for their high capacity 1-10Gbps Ethernet Backhaul Direct (EBD) product means they will have to refund UK communications providers (ISPs) around £14 million.

BT Group has today published their latest results to the end of June 2019 (Q1 19/20 financial), which reveals that Openreach’s FTTP and G.fast based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) ISP networks have grown their coverage to 1.51 million and 2.16 million UK premises respectively (overall total of 3.7m, up from 3.2m last quarter).

Cheshire UK Finish Rollout of Superfast Broadband to 95% of Premises

The £22m+ state aid fuelled Connecting Cheshire project has finally completed Phase 2 of their contract with Openreach (BT) to rollout a “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network – FTTC (VDSL2) and a little FTTP – to cover 95% of local premises (100,000 additional premises), albeit 7 months later than planned.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced that their multi-billion pound “Fibre First” rollout of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology will – over the next 12 months – be reaching parts of an additional 36 new locations across the UK (total now 74).

The state aid supported Connecting Cumbria project, which has so far made “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services available to around 93% of premises in the county (125,000 extra homes and businesses), is being extended to add a further 2,000+ premises via Openreach’s Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

O2 UK Confirms Plan to Re-enter Fixed Line Broadband Market

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has confirmed earlier reports that it intends to return to the fixed line broadband market. The move could result in the provider either moving to build their own “full fibre” (FTTP) style network or partnering with another ISP (e.g. Virgin Media, Cityfibre).

Openreach Trials 100% Electric Vans for their UK Engineers

Broadband and phone engineers working for Openreach in several parts of the United Kingdom, including Leeds and Birmingham, have begun using 100% electric vans as part of a new trial. Currently 15 vehicles are included in the national pilot and charging points have been installed at various buildings (exchanges, homes etc.).

Ofcom has announced that they will test a softer approach to UK telecoms regulation on Openreach’s new FTTP broadband Exchange Upgrade trial in Salisbury (Wiltshire), which is testing how the operator will in the future handle a complete migration from copper to “full fibre” lines.

Openreach Cuts UK ISP Wholesale Prices for FTTP Ultrafast Broadband

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they’re cutting the wholesale prices of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband lines from 1st September 2019, which is intended to help encourage take-up of the new service by ISPs (provided Ofcom approve their proposed changes, which they probably will).

Full Fibre Broadband Coverage of UK New Build Homes Hits 77.8%

A new analysis of broadband coverage in the UK has indicated that 77.8% of new build homes constructed across the whole of 2019 so far were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 70.5% in 2018), which rises to 94% for “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage (up from 93% last year).

Over the past few months we’ve had a number of emails from people in rural parts of Hampshire that have been overlooked by the state aid supported Hampshire Superfast Broadband project. Ofcom has today opened a new investigation to examine whether BT has complied with its charging obligations, which occurred after the UK operator indicated to the regulator that it may not have correctly billed for Excess Construction Charges (ECCs) when providing new business lines (Ethernet services etc.).

The Suffolk County Council in England has issued a new report on the progress of their £64m project to help extend the coverage of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable ISP networks to 98% of local premises by the end of 2020, which after some initial delays is now running nearly 6 months ahead of schedule.
