The South Gloucestershire Council in England, which is currently working with Openreach (BT) to extend a FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network to nearly universal coverage (currently over 97%), has secured another £900,000 from the EU and UK Government’s to reach an extra 100 rural businesses.

BT’s top brass has this week warned investors that they may have to reduce capital expenditure, cut costs, borrow more and reduce their dividend in order to fund the planned rollout of Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which aims to reach 15 million UK premises by around 2025.

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme from Openreach (BT), which offers to help co-fund the cost of upgrading digitally isolated communities to receive their FTTC, G.fast or FTTP based superfast broadband ISP network, has now signed-up its 930th community and expects to deliver for 100,000 UK premises.

The Government’s Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, has wrongfully claimed that its Building Digital UK programme has now helped to push fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network coverage to 97% of UK premises (the expectation is that this could reach around 98% by the end of 2020).

The Building Digital UK scheme, which since 2013 has helped to extend “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 5,123,530 extra premises (up by +46.9K since Q4 2018), has just published its latest take-up data to the end of March 2019. Coverage continues to grow, albeit slowly as contracts near their end.

Openreach (BT) has begun encouraging ISPs to cancel “unwanted” orders for their high capacity Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) connectivity products, which they’ve defined as any orders that are taking longer than 90 days to deliver. Some might just call those “late“.

Ofcom has today deemed Openreach to be making “real progress” in their on-going efforts to become a distinct “legally separate” company away from BT, although the UK telecoms regulator seeks more “transparency” around their efforts to increase independence and solid details on their future FTTP broadband plan beyond 2020.

The £442m (public and private investment) Digital Scotland (DSSB) project with BT (Openreach) is continuing to expand and in the final stages we’re seeing a lot more Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) reaching rural parts, most recently around Lanarkshire and Aberdeenshire.

Last year Openreach informed ISPs that it was going to change the way it handled installation options across their broadband portfolio (here) and this is now about to start, with a new ‘Standard‘ and ‘Premium‘ Managed Engineer Install being added to their G.fast hybrid fibre “ultrafast broadband” service from 30th July 2019.

Long-time readers of ISPreview.co.uk will know that Openreach (BT) has had plenty of issues when trying to get network upgrades working at their optimal on their estate of ECI supplied street cabinets (particularly for hybrid fibre FTTC broadband ISP services). Now it looks like they might possibly be about to replace some of them.

28th June, 2019 (31 Comments)

In an interesting development Openreach (BT) has decided to change the “minimum selling rule” for their hybrid fibre G.fast broadband lines from 100Mbps to 120Mbps, which means that UK ISPs won’t be able to sell the service to customers unless their lines can achieve downloads of 120Mbps+.

One of the little known gripes against Openreach’s on-going UK rollout of “gigabit capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology is that some newly deployed areas are still limiting the network to a top download speed of 330Mbps (50Mbps upload), rather than supporting 1Gbps speeds.

The Cornwall County Council in South West England has agreed to create the “Superfast 3 – Inclusive Growth” broadband project at a total cost of £5.835m, which could extend the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to “at least” 2,700 additional premises (mostly homes and 546 businesses).

Customers taking part in Sky Broadband’s new SOGEA product trial are also being provided with a new router (SR203), which is probably the long awaited successor to their current Sky Q Hub (ER110) device and will most likely be shipped alongside future G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” packages (possibly FTTC).

The annual Connected Britain Awards 2019 (Total Telecom) were handed out last might to a number of winners in London, which among other things saw several UK broadband ISPs and “full fibre” network projects (Openreach, BT, KCOM, Superfast Essex etc.) pick up awards for their various different efforts.

18th June, 2019 (20 Comments)

Openreach (BT) has announced two new UK technology trials (i.e. an FTTP Exchange Upgrade process and Digital Voice services) for premises in Salisbury (Wiltshire) and Mildenhall (Suffolk), which forms part of their wider efforts to move toward an All-IP and national “full fibre” broadband ISP network.

17th June, 2019 (13 Comments)

At present the two fastest packages on Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network are asymmetric options, which offer peak download speeds of 500Mbps or 1000Mbps and uploads of 165Mbps or 220Mbps respectively. The good news is that symmetrical speeds are coming.
