Consumers-Complaints-for-Ofcom-UK-via-Smartphone

Ofcom has published their latest quarterly (Q1 2024) study of UK consumer complaints, which saw NOW Broadband (NOW TV) being labelled as the worst provider for attracting the most gripes about broadband and landline phone, while Virgin Media did the same for pay TV services and O2 were the worst for Mobile.

Telecoms giant BT Group have today posted a brief trading update to the end of June 2024, which reveals that Openreach added another 1 million premises (unchanged on the previous quarter) to the coverage of their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network – delivering total coverage to 15 million. Take-up also held at a steady 34%.

Broadband ISP and UK mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that customers of their pay TV service will be able to access discovery+’s extensive coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 24, regardless of what package they’re on and “at no extra cost” until 12th August.

Mobile UK network analyst firm Streetwave has published the first results from their work with the Growing Mid Wales (GMW) programme, which uses bin lorries to map local network (4G, 5G etc.) coverage and broadband performance. Overall, none of the mobile operators provided “Good Coverage” across more than 50% of Powys’ road network, but EE does come top (49%).

A turboprop Britten-Norman Islander (BN2T-4S) aircraft has helped a group of UK companies, led by Stratospheric Platforms (SPL), to complete trials of a new advanced airborne 5G connectivity system that could be used to help extend mobile broadband coverage into remote rural areas or to provide coverage during events/disasters etc.

The UK telecoms regulator has announced that, following a request from BT, it has launched a review of the annual licence fees they charge mobile network operators (EE, Vodafone, Three UK and O2) for use of three popular mobile spectrum bands – 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz – supporting 2G, 3G and 4G (mobile broadband) services.

The national regulator, Ofcom, has this morning hit BT with a fine of £17.5m for being “ill-prepared to respond to a catastrophic failure of its emergency call handling service last summer” (here), which readers may recall occurred after a technical fault (“complex software issue”) resulted in 14,000 emergency calls being disrupted. The disruption lasted for 10.5 hours.

Some of BT’s broadband ISP, phone, TV and mobile customers, specifically a proportion of those who have been or are in the process of being migrated to EE, appear to be experiencing a variety of problems with the process that is causing headaches. Missing services, trouble accessing accounts and general admin errors are just some of the issues being reported.

Existing customers of BT’s online Cloud storage service, which was once frequently offered alongside their various broadband packages, have been notified that the long-running service will finally be switched off on 31st October 2024. At this point “all information will be deleted“, so now might be a good time for users to download anything of relevance.

A new report from think tank Create Streets has suggested that the new UK government should make it easier for local authorities to remove old and “ugly” pay phone boxes, which are said to damage the look of many high streets by attracting litter, graffiti and.. other things.

Openreach (BT) has today released the next batch of 92 exchanges (Tranche 17) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre and will thus stop selling copper based analogue phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

Homes in the Suffolk (England) village of Felsham have been left without access to broadband and phone services for over a week because, allegedly, Openreach (BT) are unable to fix the problem – a damaged telecoms pole that was struck during a car accident on Cockfield Road – until they’ve received “an estimate” from the driver’s insurance company.

Network testing firm Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a new study that examined connectivity experiences in the UK, which saw Virgin Media (O2) win two awards for ‘Best Broadband Experience‘ and ‘Best Combined Connectivity Experience‘, while EE came top for ‘Best Mobile Experience‘.

Telecoms giant BT has released some new internet traffic statistics from the final UEFA Euro 2024 football match between England and Spain (8pm) on Sunday 14th July 2024, which saw a 142% increase in customers streaming the game compared to England’s semi-final against the Netherlands.

Openreach and BT might have recently delayed their plan to withdraw old copper-based analogue line services (PSTN phones and WLR) from Dec 2025 to 31st Jan 2027 (here and here), but conversely they’ve also just issued contract termination notifications to all WLR providers with an effective date of 31st Dec 2025. Don’t worry, it’ll make sense.

The BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker, which is really intended for network operators and ISPs but has always been used by savvy consumers to check the status of BTW and Openreach based services, appears to have recently made a change that seems to stop displaying ADSL results in areas where VDSL or FTTP (or both) are present.
