Up to 38,000 of BT and Openreach’s unionised workers will today be heading back to hundreds of picket lines across the UK as they begin a second major national strike, which is part of an ongoing pay dispute. The strike, which will run through today and tomorrow, is expected to cause more delays to service provisions etc.

Owners of UK ISP BT’s latest TV set-top-box hardware (TV Box Pro) for their broadband-based Pay TV (IPTV) service may be pleased to learn that they’ve added a new “internet mode“, which enables you to access TV shows, browse channels and apps all in one place, without the need for a TV aerial. BT also added a multiroom box.

The Mobile UK trade body, which represents Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone, has published a new report that highlight how mobile connectivity can help councils overcome the challenges of delivering adult social care. But it’s also pushing for rates relief and easier planning approvals on new masts etc.

BT has launched a High Court case against Virgin Media (VMO2), which it accuses of having migrated customers away from their EE based Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform (Virgin Mobile) before an agreement had been concluded. The broadband ISP and mobile giant is reportedly seeking £24.6m in compensation.

The Government’s move in May 2022 to conduct a “full national security assessment” of last year’s decision by Patrick Drahi’s (French billionaire) Altice UK, which increased its stake in UK broadband and telecoms giant BT from 12.1% to 18% (here), will result in “no further action” being taken by the Secretary of State.

The Scottish Government has unveiled an extension of their existing £600m Reaching 100% (R100) contract with BT (Openreach), which will see a further £36m being invested to cover an additional 2,637 rural properties with a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network. But completion is now 2028!

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a refreshed range of Pay Monthly ‘Essentials‘, ‘All Rounder‘ and ‘Full Works‘ mobile plans for SIM-Only, handset bundles and connected device customers, which add various new features (e.g. a WiFi Coverage Boost, the Apple One subscription plan and a Multi-Line SIM discount etc.).

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has today announced that up to 38,000 of BT and Openreach’s unionised workers, as part of their ongoing pay dispute with the telecoms and broadband provider, will go on a second major national strike this month – this time occurring on Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st August.

A complaint raised by rival UK ISP BT (EE) has resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning two adverts (a website and email promotion) for Sky Broadband’s service, both of which were found to have misleadingly claimed that the company was the “Top Performing Major Provider“.

A new MSE report has called on Ofcom to improve consumer protection measures for mobile roaming when within the EU, which follows after the organisation’s research highlighted that consumers are still at risk of being caught out by unexpected roaming costs. But operators aren’t helping by adopting different definitions of a “day“.

Benchmarking firm nPerf has today published the results from their latest annual crowdsourced study into UK mobile broadband (4G, 5G) performance for the first half of 2022, which once again crowns EE as the best network operator for internet connectivity. But Three UK is starting to threaten and delivered the fastest download speeds.

Mobile and broadband provider BT (EE) and Nokia claim to have achieved somewhat of a “European first” by aggregate four channels of radio spectrum in a live 5G Standalone (SA) network. In theory, this could make their UK mobile network capable of delivering some exceptionally fast download and upload speeds.

The recent two-day national strike by up to 38,000 of BT and Openreach’s unionised workers (here) – due to a dispute over pay – does not appear to have caused any significant problems for either the operator or its customers. At least that is the feedback we’ve had from UK broadband ISPs and alternative networks.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has given a more detailed comment about the likely impact on their full fibre plans of broadband rival Virgin Media (VMO2) acquiring budget UK ISP TalkTalk, which he admitted would “knock off some cream of the FTTP case” but it apparently won’t “touch the fundamentals of it at all“.

Customers of both EE’s and BT’s mobile UK service will be able to enjoy it a bit more on Sunday this weekend after the operators announced that they were zero-rating data (mobile broadband) across their network this Sunday. The move is intended to celebrate the Women’s England vs. Germany UEFA European Championship final.
