Awkward Timing as BT Call Centre Sets up “Food bank” for Staff

Telecoms and broadband ISP giant BT, specifically EE’s call centre in Newcastle, appear to have demonstrated a surprising level of poor timing after a food donation point for staff was setup that looks and sounds a lot like a food bank. The move was revealed just as a ballot on national strike action over pay occurs.

Seemingly in the hope of finding more ways to help those who may be struggling to pay their bills.

Openreach Still Coy on Plan to Fix 330Mbps Capped UK FTTP Lines

Openreach has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they recognise the plight of the less than 50,000 premises that are still stuck on older ECI based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband lines, which limits such homes to a top download speed of 330Mbps. But there’s still no certainty about when this will be resolved.

Broadband ISP BT to Scrap Email and Cloud for New Customers

New broadband and mobile customers of UK ISP BT will, from the end of this month, no longer be able to benefit from the operator’s included Email and online Cloud storage features. The good news is that existing customers will be unaffected, at least for now.

Openreach CEO Appears to Blame Brexit for Pace of Broadband Build UPDATE

The CEO of network access provider Openreach (BT), Clive Selley, appears to have risked a spat with the UK Government after he complained that the rollout of faster broadband services (e.g. gigabit-capable FTTP) had been slowed by the “tortuous” post-Brexit process of recruiting workers from the EU.

Ofcom Moves to Protect Essential UK BT and KCOM Phone Boxes

Ofcom has today introduced new rules to protect public UK phone boxes (payphones) – specifically those built by BT and KCOM – when they exist in areas with “poor mobile signals or high accident rates“. In addition, payphones will now require battery backup so that they can keep working after going digital (all-IP).

A complaint raised by broadband ISP and mobile giant BT looks set to result in the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a TV and poster advert for Sky Mobile (Sky Broadband), which was found to have “misleadingly” claimed to have offered “the perfect network“.

Ofcom and BT Reportedly Prep Contingency Plans for AltNet Flops UPDATE

A new newspaper report claims that “runaway inflation” is threatening to cause a “wave of bankruptcies” among the new generation of alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, which is said to have triggered Ofcom into drawing up contingency plans with BT for how to handle the fallout, should smaller players start to fail.

Mobile operator Three UK this morning claims to have overtaken arch rival EE (BT) for population coverage of their new ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network, which they say can now reach 54% of the United Kingdom. By comparison, EE put their own figure at 50% on 10th May 2022 (here).

BT Trials Quantum Radios to Boost Future UK 5G Mobile Cover

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has begun to trial a new “hyper-sensitive quantum antenna technology using excited atomic states,” which represents a new way of detecting radio waves that could find much weaker signals than conventional receivers and thus boost the capabilities of future 5G mobile (broadband) and IoT networks.

Ofcom has published their 2022 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. For example, Vodafone attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while BT secured the highest (88%). But overall, service quality has improved since COVID-19.
