Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT have today confirmed that they will recruit more than 600 additional apprentices and graduates in 2025 (up from 500 in 2024) – forming part of their September 2025 intake. The roles will span across areas such as cybersecurity, software engineering and customer service.
As usual, the new roles will be also be spread across a number of UK locations, including in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Darlington, Ipswich, Leeds, London, Manchester, Sheffield, and Warrington (field-based roles will also be in communities across the country).
BT notes that they’re one of the UK’s largest private sector apprenticeship employers and have recruited more than 3,000 apprentices and graduates over the past five years, although this does tend to gloss over job losses in other areas.

Athalie Williams, Chief Human Resources Officer at BT Group, said:
“I’m incredibly proud of the opportunities we provide to develop new talent at BT Group and recognise the valuable contributions graduates and apprentices bring to the workforce. Last year alone, we recruited around 500 apprentices and graduates, all eager to learn, develop their skills, and help deliver better experiences for our customers.”

Hope these are proper long term apprenticeships not the quick and speedy ‘Modern Apprenticeships’ that were in vogue 25 years ago – poor kids learn very little except how to pass the course, certainly very little about the job and company unless taken out of their work area and shown all the company.
I know how things were planned to go having managed a couple when I was in BT System Integration. Took one or other of the lads out around the company (BT) sites to make sure he had a flavour of exchanges, poles & holes and even the training schools; use my contacts to get a manager at a remote site to spend time with them showing them the job.
Others weren’t so lucky.
Done a bit of digging… So there is several types of ‘Apprentice’ with time scales of 16 months to get NVQ Level 3, to 4 years as an in work degree course. As someone who went through the 3 year scheme that GPO/BT ran in the past I’m frustrated for the those who get selected; all of the differing apprentice selections do seem to be that the youths (old GPO/BT term) are straight into their final job role – at age 16/17/18 do they really know what they want to do with/in their working career? I certainly didn’t – When I started work I wanted to work with ‘wires’ – radio engineering really but was satisfied to work in P.O. Telephones. As an apprentice I saw just about every P.O./BT job role – settled in Exchange construction as a technician but because of the wide range of disciplines I retired as a radio design engineer. I doubt todays apprentices will get those chances in the one company.
New blood, good luck to them all
Just a cheap labour run from BT in my opinion. I’d join it and get out asap.
BT apprenticeships are considered pretty much the gold standard. Higher level apprentices are paid to do degrees as part of their course.
I had a great career at BT. I joined as an apprentice in 1979, straight from school and worked there for 41 years. I worked nearly the whole time in the telephone exchange. There is always new technology coming out. You’ll love it.
I joined in 1979 as a apprentice. I had a varied career over the 26 years I was with BT. Great company to work for.
Graduates who have worked for the company estimate that 90% of them leave within 5 years of joining. Promises of progression not kept and no regular pay rises. If you stay too long it can ruin your career.
