The Chief Security and Networks Officer of BT, Howard Watson, has hinted that EE may be in a position to begin their commercial deployment of 5G standalone (5G SA) mobile network technology during the second half of 2024. But they won’t have a better idea of the likely timing until this summer.

A small but important development is happening this month as BT finally ends the free distribution of a physical phone book on 31st March 2024. The move, which was announced last year, will bring to end a service that has been running since as far back as 1880. Telecoms and broadband giant BT (EE) has today launched a new multi-million-pound Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, which is a low-power and long-range fixed wireless network that claims to cover 97% of the UK’s “outdoor population” (not geography) and will be used to connect sensors or other smart IoT devices.

The UK’s independent public spending watchdog, the National Audit Office (NAO), has today published a new report into £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile / broadband cover to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025), which finds that it’s “behind schedule” and at risk of cost overruns.

A new type of mobile SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is being launched today – supported by Deutsche Telekom and Tele2 – called resilient SIM (rSIM), which can effectively upgrade a single SIM device to Dual-SIM by automatically switching between the two in case of any network issues, minimising the impact of a lost connection.

National telecoms and broadband giant BT Group has this morning announced the sale of their iconic BT Tower building in London, which is a grade II listed communications tower located in Fitzrovia, to MCR Hotels for £275 million. The new owner plans to preserve the tower, albeit now serving as an “iconic hotel“.

Benchmarking firm nPerf has today published the results from their annual 2024 crowdsourced study into UK mobile broadband (4G, 5G) performance, which once again sees Three UK being named as the country’s best and fastest operator for mobile internet performance. The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has written a new letter that singles out big ISPs, including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media (VMO2), for being too slow to implement their One Touch Switch (OTS) system, which aims to make it quicker and easier for consumers to switch providers on different networks.

BT (EE) has today announced the outcome of their recent 5G based mobile network slicing trial at their Adastral Park facility. The trial showed how future products could be launched that establish optimised network connections specifically for online Gaming, Enterprise and Enhance Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services.

A new briefing indicates that Openreach (BT) is extending some limited exemptions to their current “stop sell” on new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and related broadband ISP products by one year, which means the exemptions will now be removed on 25th March 2025 instead of this year.
