UK ISP BT has published their latest biannual (April 2023) update on the progress they’ve made in delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 7,000 premises (up from 5,900 in Oct 2022), with 800 further builds in progress (down from 2,000).

Ofcom has today begun seeking feedback from the industry on the potential future adoption of Calling Line Identification (CLI) authentication, which – once the UK has fully transitioned to digital landlines – could be adopted as a new approach to detecting and blocking “spoofed” (fake) phone numbers.

The latest Ofcom study of UK consumer complaints for Q4 2022 has, once again, named and shamed Shell Energy for attracting the most consumer moans about both home broadband and landline phone services, while BT did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media for Pay TV.

Mobile operator EE has successfully deployed two new 4G (mobile broadband) mobile masts at Rackwick (Hoy) and Stronsay on Orkney, one of north Scotland’s most remote island communities, as part of the Scottish Government’s £28.75m 4G Infill Programme (S4GI).

The Scottish Government (SG) and NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) have today awarded BT (EE) with a contract worth up to £350m over the next 6-years, which will see the UK telecoms giant become the sole provider to deliver public sector connectivity across Scotland via the Scottish Wide Area Network (SWAN).

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have been one of the worst affected yesterday after many of their customers (including yours truly) did NOT receive a notification during the Government’s nationwide test of their new Emergency Alerts service, despite using supported kit. A smaller portion of users on Vodafone, O2 and EE also had problems.

A new study from economic consultancy firm Fideres has accused UK telecoms regulator Ofcom of “tacitly allowing” TalkTalk, Virgin Media (VMO2) and other voice-only landline providers (e.g. SSE) to overcharge consumers by up to £200 million since 2009 (£100m by TT, £50m by VMO2, and a further £50m by smaller providers).

Broadband and mobile operator EE (BT) has today revealed that, as part of their commitment under the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, they’ve expanded (built or upgraded) their “fast and reliable” 4G mobile network to over 1,500 remote sites across the United Kingdom (up from 500 in Dec 2022).

A crowdfunded mobile operator called Honest Mobile, which has some very interesting features (e.g. bills that go down), are preparing to launch a new ‘Smart Signal SIM‘ that will enable users to do something we haven’t seen before – the ability to boost coverage by harnessing all of Three UK, EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 (VMO2).

We’ve lost count now of how many times ISPreview has had to say this over the years, but there are still far too many broadband ISPs in the UK – particularly larger players – that fail to clearly inform their customers of how much their package will cost post-contract. As a result, consumers often feel misled when it comes time to re-contract.

Software and internet technology giant Microsoft have today announced an expanded 10-year partnership with broadband ISP and mobile giant EE (BT). This is said to reflect a “commitment in cloud gaming to bring PC games built by Activision Blizzard, following the acquisition, and Xbox” to customers of the UK telecoms provider.

Earlier today the Government revealed (here) that they’d commit £8m to help deliver “high-speed broadband” (they didn’t clearly define this) via Satellite ISP solutions for up to 35,000 of the UK’s “most remote properties” (i.e. those unable to get gigabit-capable connections). We now know that this will involve OneWeb’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) network via partners BT and Clarus.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has their latest Mobile Network Experience Report for Q1 2023, which examines the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services of all four primary network operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to find which delivers the best performance. Once again, Three UK and EE continued to sweep the awards.

Customers of UK telecoms giant BT may be interested to learn that the ISP has been conducting trials of a new Virtual Content Delivery Network (vCDN), which uses software-based caches that can be flexibly used at selected points, deeper in the network, to bring content (video etc.) closer to the “edge” where their users consume it.

Infracapital-backed broadband ISP Fibrus, which is rolling out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across both Northern Ireland and the North of England (Scotland will follow), has issued a progress update that reveals they’ve now covered around 250,000 premises and have 36,000 customers (take-up of c.15%).

Consumer magazine Which? has published a partial summary of the results from their latest biannual 2023 survey of the best and worst broadband ISPs, which once again named Zen Internet as the best overall provider (customer satisfaction score of 81%), while TalkTalk were found to be the worst of the major players.
