BT Group to Recruit 500 More UK Apprentices and Graduates

BT Staff and Recruits UK

Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT have today confirmed that they will recruit another 500 apprentices and graduates in 2024 (up from 400 in 2023) – forming part of their September 2024 intake. The roles will span across areas such as engineering (5G, FTTP etc.), customer service, applied research, data analytics and cyber-security.

As usual, the new roles will be also be spread across a number of UK locations, including in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Darlington, Ipswich, Leeds, London, Manchester, Sheffield and Warrington.

NOTE: The new hires will naturally be spread across the group’s various divisions and company’s, such as BT, EE, Plusnet and Openreach etc.

BT notes that they’re one of the UK’s largest private sector apprenticeship employers and have recruited more than 3,000 apprentices and graduates over the past 5 years, although this does tend to gloss over job losses in other areas.

Elaine Bergin, BT Group’s Director of Colleague Experience, said:

“As one of the largest private sector employers of apprentices and graduates in the UK, we continue to recruit and attract brilliant people into our business and we offer unparalleled opportunities to those who join us.

As we build a better BT Group, we’re developing a pipeline of future talent to help grow our business, deliver great outcomes for our customers and to help underpin economic growth in the UK.”

Is that Prof Neil Ferguson moonlighting with BT? He claims there are 500 billion new apprentices that will help install fibre with speeds of 10,000 terabits per second.

Thought I could remember by making quite a few redundancies not so long ago. Perhaps this is something to do with a gov. handout to train youngsters ?

There is no government handout for graduate jobs, but younger workers do come cheaper than the retiring ones they eventually replace. BT announced they are shedding 1000s of roles in the future – when the fibre build ends and the copper network is no longer required, but any company needs to keep the flow of new skills and people coming, especially as gen-Z will churn out to their next roles even faster than earlier generations.

I’ve just been offered voluntary redundancy on service enablement in openreach. Not enough copper work to do.

Well of course they have, its the cheaper option for them, the contracts will be extremely lightweight, and ill bet there are redundancies on the remaining 801 / 802 engineering workforce that they have been trying to get rid of for some time (we all remember the Liv phone call). Shocking company to work for, hands down THE worst time i have ever had as an engineer/ manager
