The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today cleared BT Group’s agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is intended to result in a 50:50 Joint Venture (JV) company between BT Sport and Eurosport UK that will create a new TV sports offering for the UK and Ireland.

Openreach (BT) has published the Tranche 9 batch of 65 new UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will also occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

The Welsh Government has issued an easy to miss statement on Digital Connectivity in Wales, which among other things reveals that their £52.5m Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout contract with Openreach (BT) is now expected to cover slightly more premises. But this will push completion back to 31st March 2023.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today added 12 new places (towns and villages) to their £15bn rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which also includes a few corrections due to past errors and a larger build on the Isle of Wight. Some 8 million premises are now covered.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has this afternoon formally served notice for strike action against UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant BT (inc. Openreach), which will take place on Friday 29th July and Monday 1st August 2022. Up to around 38,000 workers could potentially go on strike, although exact figures may be less.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal has today “dismissed” CityFibre’s attempt to challenge Ofcom’s approval of Openreach’s (BT) “Equinox” offer (here), which introduced a “major” price cut (details) at wholesale to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for UK ISPs. But the operator is far from giving up.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has today, after BT rejected this week’s last minute talks proposal to reach a compromise agreement over pay, said they will formally serve notice on the UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant (inc. Openreach) of their intention to launch the first national strike in 35 years.

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2022 study of UK consumer complaints has revealed that ISP Shell Energy attracted the most moans for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly mobile services and Virgin Media were also on the naughty step for Pay TV.

Telecoms and UK broadband giant BT has today announced that it plans to grow its “in-house Digital talent” resource to 6,300 people (up from 3,500 at 1st April 2022). The majority will be brought on board by April 2024, but only around 1,000 of the new colleagues will come from the UK and the rest (1,800) will be recruited in India.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has announced that its long-running campaign, which uses the High Court to force major UK broadband ISPs into blocking websites that are suspected of facilitating copyright infringement (internet piracy), is being extended to mobile operators – starting with EE (BT).

Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net service, has published their latest Q1-Q2 2022 (H1) study of 5G based mobile broadband performance from Three UK, EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 (VMO2), which found that Three once again delivered the fastest average (median) download speed. But Vodafone still wins on uploads.

Ofcom has today opened a new monitoring programme, which will pay special attention to checking whether internet phone providers, such as those offered by dedicated Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and broadband providers (ISP), are ensuring the availability of access to emergency services (999) during power cuts.

UK ISP BT has updated their existing range of discounts, not least by boosting the value on some of their included reward vouchers (preloaded MasterCards) and also shaving an extra pound or two off the existing offer prices for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages. Some FTTP plans also include a 1-month free speed boost.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H1 2022 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have boosted their reach to 37.61% of premises (up from 30.23% in H2 2021) and 69.24% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 65.22%). But the results vary around England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland.

The state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England has today issued another update on the full fibre rollout progress of their £6m Fibre Extension Programme (FEP) contract with Openreach (BT), which was originally due to complete by the end of 2021 but is still ongoing.

Telecoms giant BT has posted a new update on their current network plans and performance, which among other things reveals that data and internet traffic over their fixed network (broadband and Ethernet) recently hit a new peak of 28Tbps (Terabits per second) during their busiest hour (up from 25Tbps at the end of 2021).
