Network access provider Openreach (BT) has notified UK ISPs that they’ve launched three new special offers, which reflect a mix of connection discounts and free upgrades for those looking to take a 1Gbps speed Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) line – this provides dedicated point-to-point data connectivity between sites.

Network access provider Openreach has moved to improve how they engage with UK communication providers (e.g. broadband ISPs) and their customers by making a series of organisational updates, which they hope will deliver an “even sharper focus on customer experience and end to end operational performance“.

Alternative network operator Netomnia (Substantial Group), which has deployed their own full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to cover 3 million UK premises RFS (inc. 460,000 customers), have today confirmed that they’ve been acquired by the owners of Virgin Media (O2) and nexfibre (i.e. InfraVia, Liberty Global and Telefónica) for £2bn. But rival bidder CityFibre may yet raise a competition complaint.

The latest Q4 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have just been published and reveal that their gigabit broadband network increased its UK coverage by 115,100 premises in the quarter (down from 139k in Q3), while related customers fell to total 5,687,600 (down by -16.7k in Q4 vs +60.8k in Q3). But their mobile base grew and 5G outdoor population coverage hit 87%.

The recently launched virtual mobile operator (mvno) for the Channel Islands, Coop Mobile, has complained to the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) that rival operator JT has been disrupting the ability of consumers to switch to Coop’s service by preventing them from being able to keep their existing mobile number as part of the process.

The AllPoints Fibre Network (APFN), which is a wholesale platform that aggregates connectivity from several different UK full fibre networks, has today announced that they’ve signed a new partnership with Sky’s business broadband and wholesale division – Sky Business Wholesale – to make their Ethernet services available through APFN’s aquila platform.

Aviva-backed alternative gigabit broadband operator Truespeed, which has rolled out their full fibre (FTTP) network across 177,000 premises (44k customers) in rural parts of South West England, has today confirmed that they’ve reached a major merger agreement with Freedom Fibre to consolidate their two networks.

Mobile infrastructure company Cornerstone (CTIL), which was originally established as part of a UK network sharing agreement between O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone (Vantage Towers), has today announced a new strategic partnership with StonesThro to deploy a nationally distributed Micro-Edge cloud infrastructure via their estate of c.16,000 mast / cell sites.

Communications and broadband provider BT Business has today announced that they’re working alongside global IT consultancy Avanade and Microsoft to launch a tailored AI training for all 11,000 of its employees, which they say aims to “radically transform how we work and to better serve our customers“. Cost-cutting probably has a role to play too, we’d imagine.

Alternative broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group), which has already expanded their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 3 million UK premises (here) and is close to signing a major consolidation agreement with either Virgin Media’s (nexfibre) parents or CityFibre (here), is understood to have held talks over redundancies with around 50 employees.

Australian investment group Macquarie Asset Management has acquired Infracapital’s 50% stake in the Last Mile Infrastructure Group, which gives it 100% control of the multi-utility infrastructure group that designs, builds, owns and manages more than 930,000 “connections” across Great Britain (including electricity, gas, water, wastewater and fibre optic broadband etc.).

A new report claims that Australian investment group Macquarie has hired business advisors at Perella Weinberg Partners (PWP) to prepare KCOM for sale in Q2 2026. The operator is the incumbent broadband and phone provider for Hull, although their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network also extends into other parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

O2’s (Virgin Media) joint deployment with IONX Networks (formerly Dense Air), which last year claimed to have become one of the first mobile operators in the UK to successfully integrate a neutral host Small Cell into their live 5G Standalone (SA) core network (here), has been cast into doubt after IONX fell into administration at the end of last year.

National operator Openreach (BT) has today warned that “more than half a million business lines” still haven’t migrated away from the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to new IP-based digital phone (VoIP etc.) alternatives, which with only 12-months to go until the service is switched-off risks firms being exposed to price hikes, as well as “failing equipment and eventual loss of service“.

Long-running UK ISP VISPA, which was first launched way back in 1999, appears to have begun informing customers that they’ve “ceased trading and decided to commence liquidation proceedings“. The provider’s remaining broadband subscribers have been told they will need to “immediately” find an alternative.
