Network access provider Openreach announced another change to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services today, which cuts the annual wholesale rental of their premium small business focused 1Gbps (220Mbps upload) tier from £1,173.36 to £900 excluding VAT (inc. FTTPoD). The change will be effective from 1st August 2025.

Alternative network operator CityFibre, which has already built a gigabit-capable full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to cover 4.3 million UK premises (RFS), is reportedly set to sign a £2bn funding deal – reflecting a split of debt and equity – to help keep them in business and support their plans for a major consolidation of rival operators.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has kicked off their first UK pilot to test the effectiveness of a targeted approach for safeguarding vulnerable customers during the mass migrations away from the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), which is due to be switched-off, in favour of a temporary alternative service.

The not-for-profit London Internet Exchange (LINX), which handles a large chunk of UK and global data traffic through their switches via around 900 members (broadband ISPs, mobile and CDN providers etc.), has today announced the official introduction of a Service Level Agreement (SLA) solution as an add-on to their peering service.

The heavily indebted TalkTalk Group has reportedly begun the process of hiring City advisers – with both Barclays or Morgan Stanley said to be in the frame – in order to oversee the possible breakup and sale of their consumer broadband arm of the same name, and their PXC wholesale division.

The UK Government has published its Infrastructure Strategy for the next 10 years – backed by £725bn in long-term funding for maintenance and major projects, which promises to “transform how infrastructure projects are planned and delivered” in order to “deliver stability, investment and national renewal“. And there’s some good news for broadband and mobile networks.

The ITS Technology Group, which has built various open access full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks across parts of the UK, has today announced that they’ve secured a £3.5 million dark fibre network build contract for Carmarthenshire (Southwest Wales) as part of the Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme.

Alternative broadband operator All Points Fibre Networks (APFN), which is owned by Fern Fibre (Fern Trading), has today announced that their long-running internal consolidation – bringing together their own-built FTTP networks and retail ISPs into a single group (Giganet, Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre, the original AllPoints Fibre, and Cuckoo) – has now completed.

Shropshire-based UK broadband ISP Aquiss has announced that they’ve launched an additional range of internet access packages based off Freedom Fibre’s network. This has so far deployed a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 350,000 premises across parts of England and Wales (aspiration to reach 1 million premises by 2030).

The ongoing £85.5m legal dispute between mobile and broadband giant Vodafone and a group of 62 current and former UK franchisees (here) recently experienced another twist. This came after the network operator confirmed that it had terminated the contracts of 12 franchisees who had continued working with them while also being party to the case.

The CEO of BT Group, Allison Kirkby, has hinted at the possibility that network access provider Openreach could be spun off into a completely separate company in the future. But this would only be considered once their roll-out of a national gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network completes (i.e. after 2030).

The ownership of alternative network operator and ISP Runfibre, which has built a small Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across rural parts of South Gloucestershire in England, appears to have changed again after a relatively new provider called Nova Fibre took control of the business from the Fibreray Group.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today warned businesses across the UK that they must “act now” in order to be ready for the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to be switched-off in favour of IP-based digital phone (VoIP etc.) services. But many are leaving it until the last minute, “risking network outages and malfunctioning systems“.

VodafoneThree, which reflects the now finalised c.£16bn merger between Vodafone and Three UK (here), has this morning set out a set of post-merger plans for their 4G / 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network coverage, performance and branding. Starting with a 20% average speed boost on 4G for Three and SMARTY customers, and a new broadband partnership with CommunityFibre.
