ISP MS3 Communications has announced that its new and independent ultra-fast fibre optic broadband ISP network in Hull (East Yorkshire, England), which will compete with local incumbent KC, has officially gone live and is beginning to take on its first business customers.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) appears to have awarded a grant worth £2.74 million to help over 2,600 small and medium sized businesses in Northumberland (North East England) gain access to superfast and ultrafast broadband ISP connectivity via a “range of incentives“.

Enterprise M3, a public-private partnership that seeks to support businesses in the M3 area of west Surrey and Hampshire, has setup a new £200,000 fund to help make superfast broadband available to firms in the last 10% or so of the regions rural areas.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national broadband and phone network in the United Kingdom, has published “substantial price reductions” of up to 50% for its 100Mbps to 10Gbps capable Ethernet and Leased Line services to business customers, ISPs and mobile operators.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, confirms that the European Commission (EC) “did not raise any concerns” about its plans to slash the price that ISPs, mobile operators and businesses must pay to BT for 1Gbps+ wholesale Leased Line (Ethernet) services in all parts of the UK except Hull and London.

O2 Wholesale, which supplies business clients with internet connectivity solutions, has told their ISP partners that it’s “business as usual” at the firm. The comment follows O2 and BE Broadband’s (Telefonica) £180m sale of its fixed line home broadband and phone business to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) earlier this month.

Mobile operator O2 UK (BE Broadband), which is owned by Spanish multinational Telefonica, has today confirmed that their struggling fixed line Home Broadband and Home Phone service is to be taken over by arch rival BSkyB (Sky Broadband) for a consideration of £180 million.

TalkTalk Business, which back in 2011 warned SME’s that “domestic grade broadband is not designed to cope with the demands of running a business“, appears to have changed its tune. A large number of their customers have now received letters which confirm that they’ll soon be migrated to the ISPs residential TalkTalk Plus package.

The Institute of Directors, an organisation for EU business leaders, polled 1,147 of its members to reveal that faster broadband could improve productivity at 83% of companies, encourage 31% to invest more in their business and cause 15% of firms to hire more staff. But it also criticised BTOpenreach in the UK for low service satisfaction levels.

The boss of business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) has warned companies to think of their broadband connection before ceasing an old fax line (facsimile). The warning comes after the internet provider noticed a trend where some firms would cancel fax services without realising that the same line was also being used for broadband.

ABI Research estimates that the global fixed broadband ISP market (i.e. DSL, cable and fibre optic services) managed to grow by 7% last year to generate a total service revenue of around £120 billion ($188bn), which was helped by a strong growth in ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) connectivity.

Cable provider Virgin Media UK has today released its latest results (Q4-2012), which saw subscribers to their broadband ISP climb to total 4,465,000 (up by +51,600). But the big news is that international cable operator Liberty Global (LGi) has officially agreed to buy VM (merger) for an enterprise value of approximately $23.3 billion (£14.88bn).
