Quad-play provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today revealed its latest Q4-2013 (calendar) results, which showed that their total broadband ISP subscriber base added +21,900 new customers during the quarter to total 4,510,500 (up from +13.6k added in Q3 2013). Oddly though, their UK cable network coverage figure fell slightly.

Satellite broadband ISP Avanti, along with several other space communications firms, can rest a little easier today after landowner BT agreed a new 999-year lease for the Goonhilly Earth Station, a large telecommunications site located at Goonhilly Downs on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall (England).

BT has denied that its commercial investment of £2.5 billion, which is being used to make their superfast broadband (FTTC/P) network available to around 66% of the United Kingdom by Spring 2014 (19 million premises), will complete with significant underspend worth hundreds of millions.

Vodafone UK has reported that its new 4G Mobile Broadband services are now available in 13 cities across the country, attracting 370k subscribers (Q4 2013), and a bigger move into Pay TV is being rumoured. But sadly their fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base has suffered another sharp fall to just 59k users (down from 85k in Q2 2013).

Mobile operator Three UK has signed a major multi-million pound 5-year fibre optic capacity deal with Virgin Media Business, which should improve their 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband speeds by boosting the platforms backhaul network with an extra 300Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The national telecoms operator has rebuffed claims made by business Internet provider Timico, which earlier this week estimated that 10% of companies in the United Kingdom could face the “worst case scenario” of being completely “cut off” from their broadband services as BT withdraws its old 20CN platform.

Budget communications provider TalkTalk has seen its strongest quarterly growth in broadband subscribers yet, fuelled by additions from their new deal with the Post Office, after the operator added +110,000 customers during Q4 2013 (calendar) to reach a total of 4,186,000 (up from just +5k added in Q3 2013).

National UK cable provider Virgin Media has acquired Lancashire-based rival Smallworld Fibre, which typically served homes in western Scotland and North West England, for an undisclosed amount and in the process added 40,000 new customers.

The retail division of BT has ended 2013 with a total fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base of 7,111,000 and that represents a stable growth of +150k in Q4 2013 (down slightly from +156k in Q3). The figure includes 1.9 Million superfast BTInfinity (FTTC) customers (up by +228k in Q4 vs +195k added in Q3).

It’s been a difficult few months for BSkyB (Sky Broadband) but the operators latest Q4 2013 results have revealed that their broadband ISP subscriber base continued to grow by +110,000 in Q4 to total 5,127,000 (stable from +111k added in Q3). Churn also fell and ARPU grew but their unbundled (LLU) network expansion stopped.

A new report indicates that Vodafone and Sky have held joint high-level talks concerning a collaboration against BT, which could take any one of several different forms.
