The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has published a new Huawei sponsored study that says “a good dose of reality” is in order as it questions whether the new fixed line superfast broadband and 4G mobile solutions can really deliver the “sizeable boost to GDP growth” and job creation, which are so often touted by the UK government.

TalkTalk Business has today announced the forthcoming November 2012 launch of their new managed “SuperFast Broadband” service, which will make use of the latest Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology to offer download speeds of up to 80Mbps (Megabits per second) and uploads of up to 20Mbps to firms around the UK.

Broadband provider ADSL24 has had an interesting couple of months. A quick glance at the company’s accounts (06272441) suggested that the ISP might have had difficulty turning a profit and most recently appointed three new directors. On top of that its trading name has just changed.

ISPreview.co.uk has learnt that Pulse DSL, a little known broadband provider for the UK market, quietly ceased trading during July 2012. Its website has now vanished but the ISP looks set to make a surprise comeback, albeit under a different brand.

Communications provider O2 Wholesale UK (formerly BE Wholesale) has surveyed 100 companies in the UK IT industry and revealed that 70% expect “uptake” of fixed broadband ISP services to increase over the next 6 months, with demand for remote working being the dominant factor.

MS3 Communications, which is currently deploying a new fibre optic ultra-fast broadband ISP network for businesses in Hull (Yorkshire, UK), has expressed “outrage” at the local incumbent telecoms operator (KC) after they allegedly prevented MS3 from advertising within the local Stadium (home to Hull City and Hull FC).

The long suffering Digital Region network, which offers an alternative superfast broadband platform to BT in South Yorkshire, has received a boost after it adopted Fluidata’s Service Exchange Platform (SEP). The move could give local homes a choice of more than 50 ISPs instead of just a handful.

Broadband ISP supplier O2 Wholesale UK (BE Wholesale) has warned that an “average business” of 50 employees can eat 61GB (GigaBytes) of internet data a month (i.e. email 26GB, browsing 22GB, video 1.7GB and video conferencing 7.9GB), which is allegedly more expensive for rival providers to cater for than their own “unlimited” option.

Global Tier 1 network supplier Level 3 Communications has suggested that broadband subscribers in the UK should, if they want to help ISPs invest in and develop better superfast broadband infrastructure, be prepared to pay more for their internet usage. But ISPs must first be willing to make that change.

Fujitsu UK has announced the expansion of its 100G Dark Fibre network to cover an additional 2,500km of fibre optic cable, which supports “true” 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) data capacity across its carrier-grade Managed Wavelength Service (MWS) network.

The shareholders of European communications provider Vodafone have voted 99% in favour of the £1.044 Billion deal (38p per share) to buy telecoms giant Cable & Wireless Worldwide (CWW), which gives the operator plenty of new capacity and room to grow both its existing fixed line and future mobile services.

Manchester-based business ISP Metronet UK, which operates a hybrid superfast fibre optic (FTTx) and wireless broadband network, claim to be planning for further coverage expansion after a management buyout supported by private equity firm LDC pushed an additional investment of £11 Million into the provider.
