Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK have published their latest results to the end of September 2020 (financial Q2 FY21), which saw their fixed broadband base top 838,000 customers (up by +45k in the quarter vs +42K in the previous quarter), while their mobile base declined to 17,380,000 (down by -200k).

City focused broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which is currently deploying their gigabit-capable FTTP/B network to homes across parts of 43 UK towns and cities (mostly large apartment blocks), is about to open a new HQ in Kings House, Hammersmith (London) – complementing existing offices in West London, Manchester and Reading.

As expected CK Hutchison Holdings, which is the parent of mobile network operator Three UK and some other providers, has today agreed to sell interests in European tower assets (including the UK, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Italy and Sweden) and businesses to Spanish company Cellnex for £9bn (€10 billion).

A new Middlesex-based network operator called Digital Infrastructure (DI) has today cropped up with an ambition to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network for “areas currently not served by such networks“, including homes, businesses and others in selected urban and suburban areas.

Wholesale communications provider SIMWOOD UK, which supplies business and ISPs, appears to have developed a new set of uncontended FTTC and FTTP based products aimed at home workers and smaller businesses. Just don’t call their packages “broadband,” even though they kind of still are.. a bit.

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have confirmed that its £70m business process outsourcing contract with Capita, which was signed in late 2016 as part of a 7-year deal to improve sales and customer support (among other things), has been scrapped 2 years early following allegations of poor performance.

The parent of mobile operator Three UK, CK Hutchison Holdings, has officially announced that they’re in an “advanced stage of negotiations” to potentially sell their mast and rooftop infrastructure across Europe to Cellnex in a transaction that could be worth c.£9bn (10bn Euros); it might also boost their 5G rollout.

Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has just published their latest Q3 2020 results, which saw their UK network coverage grow to reach another 125,000 UK premises and their broadband base add +47,000 new customers (up from +39.2k in the previous quarter) to total 5,365,400.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has announced the replacement of its former Chief Financial Officer, Terry Hart, with a new permanent CFO in the shape of Nick Dunn, who joins the operator after serving a 10 year stint in the same role for Gatwick Airport.

ISP Glide has criticised the UK Government’s current focus of handing out gigabit broadband vouchers to help upgrade poorly served rural homes and businesses. Instead the provider believes that the public investment could be redirected to help SMEs in business parks and urban edge environments.

New data from UK broadband ISP TalkTalk, which examined the internet usage of their customers between January to August 2020, has helped the provider to identify the top 20 British hub locations for Home Working. Overall Huddersfield saw the largest increase of network data usage (37%).

The BT Group has today published their Q2 2020/21 results, which saw Openreach expand their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3.5 million UK premises (up from 2.98m last quarter). The full fibre build rate has now hit 40,000 premises per week (up from c.34,000).

Managed communications provider and ISP Air IT has acquired London-based Netstar UK Limited and Birmingham-based Microtrading Limited for undisclosed sums, which has enabled the group to effectively double its size in the space of just nine months, while also expanding more into London and the West Midlands.
