Devon-based network builder FullFibre, which is currently working to deploy a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across rural parts of Herefordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, has officially opened a new office in the town of Ledbury.

Broadband provider TalkTalk has today announced that they have received a preliminary and non-binding takeover proposal from Toscafund Asset Management (TAM), which intends to pay 97p for every share (valuing the deal at around £1.1bn). The new owner, if successful, would seek to take the ISP private.

Mobile operator Three UK has today signed another fibre optic capacity deal, this time with Colt Technology Services, in order to help fuel their latest 5G and existing 4G based (mobile broadband) network. The deal will see Colt become a “preferred provider of fibre backhaul connectivity” for the operator.

Fixed wireless ISP Air Fibre, which delivers a broadband network to connect premises across some of the most challenging parts of Northern Ireland and recently opened a new office in Enniskillen, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they are indeed on the market for sale.

Gigabit broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which has an ambition to cover 2 million UK premises with FTTB / FTTP by the end of 2021 and then 5 million by the end of 2024 (mostly in urban areas), has strengthened its executive team by appointing industry veteran Peter Ryan to be their new MD of infrastructure.

Fixed wireless and full fibre ISP Lothian Broadband, which covers rural parts of East Lothian and Mid Lothian in Scotland, has acquired the entire issued share capital of rival provider Highland Wireless (Highland Wireless & IT Solutions), which operates much further north and covers around 4,000 premises (see image).

The new joint venture between ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 (here) appears to have today resulted in an ambition to expand their gigabit-capable broadband network to reach an extra 1 million premises “within 12 months of the merger closing” (total of 16 million) and to then connect a “further 7 million homes.”

The CEO of low-cost broadband ISP TalkTalk, Tristia Harrison, has criticised BT (Openreach) for not signing long-term discount deals (wholesale) to help boost access to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network. On the flip side BT is reportedly concerned that being too generous could breach UK competition rules.

New UK ISP Lightning Fibre, which last year started to rollout a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the inner Eastbourne area of East Sussex (here), has today secured an undisclosed investment boost from independent infrastructure and private equity firm Foresight.

Mobile operator Three UK is reportedly considering whether or not to sell some of its key assets, such as their mobile masts, in order to cash-in on rising valuations for the latest generation of gigabit-capable 5G (mobile broadband) and existing 4G network infrastructure. A merger might also be on the cards.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has threatened possible strike action against broadband and mobile giant BT after details of the operator’s plan to slash redundancy payments in half were leaked, which comes as many jobs are being lost due to the operator’s new office re-location strategy (closing many existing sites).

The US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York has officially approved the £800m ($1bn) sale of OneWeb to the UK Government and Bharti Global (here), which paves the way for the satellite ISP to continue creating a constellation of 650 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast low-latency broadband.

Back in July BT Business promised a new bursary scheme to help 1,000 UK start-ups and entrepreneurs to recover from the COVID-19 crisis (here). The ISP has now revealed that, as part of that, they will be giving 6 months of “free fibre broadband, digital phone line and mobile” to those small businesses that apply.

Broadband and mobile giant BT (EE) has today announced a new deal that, as part of their on-going work to phase-out Huawei, will turn Finnish telecoms firm Nokia into their “largest infrastructure partner” for ultrafast 5G based Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment and related UK network coverage.
