The collapse of UK civil engineering firm Complete Utilities this week (here), which disrupted ISP Gigaclear’s rollout of gigabit-capable broadband, resulted in around 300 staff being told via email that they no longer had a job. In response, an unspecified number of those former employees are attempting to sue the firm.

CityFibre has today announced that they’ve begun to rollout their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network for local homes in the West Sussex market town of Horsham, which is home to a population of around 51,000 and is expected to cost the operator £12 million to complete.

The CEO of CityFibre, Greg Mesch, has revealed that the UK operator is already in “advanced conversations” with rival alternative networks (AltNet), which could see them harness some of their multi-billion investment pot to help grow their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network coverage via acquisitions.

CityFibre, which is investing £4bn to cover 8 million UK premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by around the end of 2025, has today announced the successful completion of their first target by extending the network to cover 1 million homes and businesses before the end of 2021.

Civil engineering firm Complete Utilities, which has been working with UK ISP Gigaclear to help build gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks, has suddenly ceased trading, casting doubt on existing projects. Another street works firm, NMCN, also recently went into administration – hampering CityFibre.

The Reading Borough Councillor for Transport, Tony Page, has warned CityFibre that the local traffic disruption being caused by their rollout of a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the town is so bad that, if it doesn’t improve, they may “seek to remove” the company’s contractor Instalcom.

UK ISP iDNET has today become the latest broadband provider to start selling Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products to homes and businesses via CityFibre’s growing network, albeit initially only in four of their rollout locations – Derby, Cambridge, Leicester and Peterborough.

CityFibre UK and their local civil engineering partner, Granemore Group, have today announced a second expansion of their original £30m rollout in the Cambridgeshire city of Peterborough, which has already put their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network within reach of 60,000 premises.

Business UK ISP MLL Telecom has won a 10-year managed network services contract with East Sussex County Council (ESCC), which is valued at over £20m and will see them replace the existing Link Consortium this year and streamline the procurement of a wide range of Full Fibre managed network services.

A weekend report has claimed that several UK ISPs, including Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Vodafone, are still in discussions to join Virgin Media’s (VMO2) long-awaited plans to launch a wholesale product, which could act as a direct competitor to Openreach’s (BT) national network.

Poole-based UK ISP Juice Broadband, which already offers a mix of “full fibre” (via Openreach) and fixed wireless services to local premises around South Dorset, has become the latest internet provider to join CityFibre’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. Juice has also just begun connecting their first customers in Bournemouth.

Ofcom looks set to stoke anger among alternative UK network (AltNets) builders after the regulator today flatly rejected their concerns over Openreach’s “Equinox” offer, which will introduce a “major” price cut (details) to the incumbents wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for ISPs.

Fibre optic network builder CityFibre has today expanded their existing “strategic alliance” with Bechtel, which already helps the operator to manage their huge infrastructure deployment projects. The move formalises a 5-year extension to the existing partnership.

Ofcom has today decided to adopt the new ‘One Touch Switch‘ (OTS) process for customers of fixed line phone and broadband ISPs, which will make it easier for you to switch between providers on physically separate networks (e.g. Openreach’s full fibre to CityFibre or Virgin Media etc.). But you’ll have to wait until April 2023 to use it!
