Customers of Sky Broadband and BT have been warned that some of them may have been affected after Internet giant Yahoo! confirmed that at least 500 million of its accounts were stolen in 2014 by “state-sponsored” hackers. Both ISPs make use of the company for their email platforms.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today warned that the Government must avoid creating new regulations to tackle the challenges of cyber security. Instead ISPs say they should focus their efforts on supporting education, awareness and better training for law enforcement.

A few months ago Sky UK (Sky Broadband) won a WIPO domain name dispute against a website (Skysportslive.**) that was streaming their TV content without permission. But despite taking ownership Sky has not shut it down and the domain continues to offer links to pirated streams. Awkward.

The Intellectual Property Office has published its sixth study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile customers, which estimates that 15% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (6.7 million people) had consumed at least one item of “illegal” online content (down from 18% last year) and 5% “exclusively consumed illegal content” (down from 6%).

A new study from researchers working out of the Western Sydney University and King’s College London has claimed that court ordered website blocks by UK broadband ISPs, such as those used against Internet piracy websites, could be open to abuse.

Customers of BT, TalkTalk, PlusNet and Sky Broadband in the United Kingdom (others may also be affected) are all being warned to keep an eye out for fake pop-up support messages that claim to come from your ISP (phishing), which due to a simple exploit can appear on even legitimate websites.

A cross-party Culture, Media and Sport Committee has published the outcome from an inquiry into Internet (cyber) security, which was setup following last year’s TalkTalk hack. The report recommends a series of changes, including jail terms for “data abusers” and fines for those who “fail to report, prepare for or learn from data breaches“.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPA) has convinced the High Court to force all of the major broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom (BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, EE etc.) to block 8 additional websites that were found to facilitate Internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Last year’s traumatic hack of TalkTalk’s website, which exposed the personal details of 156,959 customers’ (including 15,656 bank account numbers and sort codes), is continuing to have repercussions after Staffordshire Police confirmed that a sixth person had been arrested.

A new study of nearly 60,000 Internet users in the United Kingdom has examined whether the 2014 block of 53 pirate websites (copyright infringement) by the largest broadband ISPs had a positive outcome for legal content. The results suggest that it did, although there may be diminishing returns for future blocks.

Broadband customers of BT, EE, Virgin Media and TalkTalk are allegedly still able to directly access (i.e. no Proxy or VPN required) some of the Internet’s most prolific piracy websites (copyright infringement) simply by typing https:// in front of the domain instead of http://.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP VFast (Orbitalnet), which covers most of Kent in the south east of England, has called upon the Internet to help catch a thief who stole equipment from one of their vans in Ashford yesterday. Luckily the van was recording his every move.

After the recent hacking and theft of personal data from several ISPs, including TalkTalk (here) and Vodafone (here), we can today report that the Northern Ireland focused wireless ISP Bluebox Broadband (North West Electronics) is the latest to fall victim with 3,000 people affected.

Police in South Wales have arrested a fifth person in connection with last month’s cyber-attack on TalkTalk’s website (here) and interestingly the individual concerned was taken into custody on suspicion of blackmail.

At the end of last week TalkTalk informed their broadband and phone customers that “less than” 1.2 million customer email addresses, names and phone numbers had been compromised by the cyber-attack on their website (here), but today this has been sharply revised down to the figure of 156,959.

BT has once again tweaked their national telecoms network in order to significantly reduce the time that a phone call connection can be held open (active) after the called party puts their handset down (i.e. such as when you end a voice call), which could make life more difficult for fraudsters.

British police have arrested a fourth person, a 16 year old boy from Norwich, in connection with the recent cyber-attack on TalkTalk’s website (here), which resulted in the personal details of 1.2 million broadband ISP customers being stolen by Internet criminals.
