Mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has produced an interesting insight into how download speeds on 4G and 5G networks – across operators including EE (BT), Vodafone, O2 (VMO2) and Three UK – compare, both generally and at different times of the day.

Customers of UK mobile operator Lyca Mobile, which until now has long held a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement to harness O2’s (VMO2) national network, have over the past few days begun informing ISPreview that their service has been stealthily switched to an EE based platform.

Credible sources have informed ISPreview that broadband ISP and mobile operator EE, as part of BT’s ongoing work to turn the provider into their “flagship brand for our consumer customers” (here), are allegedly preparing to rebrand the BT TV service to EE TV and re-launch it alongside free multi-room support, while also adding YouTube.

Mobile operator EE has revealed that 125 network upgrades are being installed on temporary 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) masts at locations across the country, which are designed to complement existing permanent sites and to increase network capacity to help manage a “huge surge in seasonal demand.”

Mobile operator EE (BT) has moved to upgrade their network coverage and data capacity for residents and visitors to the famous London village of Wimbledon, which involved upgrades to 17 existing 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) sites, as well as the deployment of new Small Cells to improve coverage in busy areas.

One of Austria’s top mobile operators, spusu, has today announced that they’ve launched in the United Kingdom with the aim of challenging the likes of giffgaff, VOXI and SMARTY. As part of that they’re offering customers a discounted unlimited plan (calls, texts and 5G data / mobile broadband) from just £19.90 per month.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today, as previously leaked (here), announced the soft launch of the UK’s first 1.6Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) package on Openreach’s network and the supporting introduction of a new Wi-Fi 6 capable Smart Hub Plus (Smart Hub 3) router and other kit.

Cheeky mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) recently hired a team of “independent secret shoppers” to visit EE (BT), Vodafone and Three UK stores to see what contracts were available to them, which found that split contracts (i.e. separate contracts for the handset and airtime) are “harder to get hold of than some networks have customers believe.”

Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a confusing new study that measured the network performance of operators that have combined their mobile and broadband ISP businesses. Overall, the study found that the fastest download speeds by a combined provider were seen by Virgin Media O2 (138Mbps average).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they’ve deployed another 411 small cells (tiny base stations) on UK street furniture and buildings in order to boost the coverage and speed of their 4G based mobile broadband network (total of 611), which they claim allows customers to “take advantage of download speeds of up to 300Mbps.”

In recent weeks the news has been full of reports (e.g. here and here), which frequently warn – without challenge – that the move by Mobile Network Operators (MNO) O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE to withdraw old 3G services will push “millions of people” into “digital poverty” and disconnect them from the internet. But are they correct?

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they will conduct an initial pilot of their 3G withdrawal scheme in the Cheshire (England) town of Warrington from the week of 17th July 2023. This will be followed by their national programme, which aims to move customers off the old data (mobile broadband) network by early 2024.

A new benchmark study from telecoms analyst firm Umlaut, which tested and measured fixed broadband connectivity in the United Kingdom over a period of 6 months, has awarded their overall “Best in Test” certificate to Virgin Media (VMO2) after they came top for both download and upload performance.

Ofcom has today published their 2023 UK study of broadband ISP, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, faults, repairs, compensation and install times amongst the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (78%), while Plusnet secured the highest (89%).

BT Group has today published their latest Q4 FY23 (quarterly) results to March 2023, which saw Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow to cover 10.274 million premises (up by 702k in the quarter vs 810k last quarter) and EE increase their 5G Ready customer base to 9.12 million (up from 8.5m).

Ofcom has today published a new analysis of the impact their “Text-to-Switch” (Auto-Switching) system for UK mobile operators (e.g. EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK), which was introduced in June 2019, had on consumers. Overall, the new system has fuelled a strong increase in consumers switching mobile operators.

Several credible sources have informed ISPreview that BT, most likely via EE – their soon-to-be “flagship brand for consumers“, have set themselves a target of being the first UK broadband ISP to market with a WiFi 7 (802.11be) capable router (SmartHub 4). The hope is to be ready by early 2024, but June 2024 is also mentioned.
