Customers of mobile operator EE (BT) may be pleased to learn that they’ll be zero-rating data (free usage) across their entire mobile network for the Coronation of King Charles III on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May 2023, “as the nation unites to celebrate the crowning of His Majesty” (yeah.. ok).

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has today launched a new console (video gaming) trade-in service that offers cashback for old gaming hardware. On top of that, they’ve also launched a new range of PC gaming packages featuring premium laptops, which are designed to complement their 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) plans.

The first UK government-funded rural 4G mobile mast upgrade has today been completed in the Lockerbie area in Scotland, which forms part (£75m) of their industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project with EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media). A further 120+ masts in Scotland are also set for upgrades.

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new survey, which examined the mobile signal quality on the London (England) to Edinburgh (Scotland) train route. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the route was found to suffer from various “not-spots“, while EE’s network performed the best for mobile broadband.

The latest data from Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has revealed that mobile network operator (MNO) Three UK is still beating rivals at Vodafone, O2 (VMO2) and EE (BT) for average median 5G broadband download speeds – scoring 275.85Mbps (Megabits / sec) in Q1 2023. Roughly double their nearest rival.

The latest Ofcom study of UK consumer complaints for Q4 2022 has, once again, named and shamed Shell Energy for attracting the most consumer moans about both home broadband and landline phone services, while BT did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media for Pay TV.

Mobile operator EE has successfully deployed two new 4G (mobile broadband) mobile masts at Rackwick (Hoy) and Stronsay on Orkney, one of north Scotland’s most remote island communities, as part of the Scottish Government’s £28.75m 4G Infill Programme (S4GI).

The Scottish Government (SG) and NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) have today awarded BT (EE) with a contract worth up to £350m over the next 6-years, which will see the UK telecoms giant become the sole provider to deliver public sector connectivity across Scotland via the Scottish Wide Area Network (SWAN).

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have been one of the worst affected yesterday after many of their customers (including yours truly) did NOT receive a notification during the Government’s nationwide test of their new Emergency Alerts service, despite using supported kit. A smaller portion of users on Vodafone, O2 and EE also had problems.

Broadband and mobile operator EE (BT) has today revealed that, as part of their commitment under the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, they’ve expanded (built or upgraded) their “fast and reliable” 4G mobile network to over 1,500 remote sites across the United Kingdom (up from 500 in Dec 2022).

A crowdfunded mobile operator called Honest Mobile, which has some very interesting features (e.g. bills that go down), are preparing to launch a new ‘Smart Signal SIM‘ that will enable users to do something we haven’t seen before – the ability to boost coverage by harnessing all of Three UK, EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 (VMO2).

Software and internet technology giant Microsoft have today announced an expanded 10-year partnership with broadband ISP and mobile giant EE (BT). This is said to reflect a “commitment in cloud gaming to bring PC games built by Activision Blizzard, following the acquisition, and Xbox” to customers of the UK telecoms provider.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has their latest Mobile Network Experience Report for Q1 2023, which examines the 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) services of all four primary network operators – EE, Vodafone, O2 and Three UK – to find which delivers the best performance. Once again, Three UK and EE continued to sweep the awards.

Mobile operators Three UK and EE (BT) have agreed to stop jointly upgrading sites through the Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL) organisation, which runs their joint network sharing venture. The move is intended to help both move faster when deploying new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband networks.

Budget UK broadband ISP Plusnet, which has often been positioned as BT’s low-cost division, have this morning confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they will today stop selling their own-brand of EE powered Pay Monthly SIM-Only Mobile plans to new customers.

Ofcom has today announced that they may revoke the current mobile operator licences – held by EE (BT), Three UK and O2 (VMO2) – for the unpaired part of the 2100MHz band (1900-1920 MHz), which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

The government and mobile operators have officially started activating the new UK-wide Emergency Alerts service, which has been designed to warn mobile users if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (e.g. severe flooding, fires and extreme weather). But it will only work on modern 4G and 5G Smartphones.
