Emergency-Alerts-on-a-UK-Mobile-Phone

The government and mobile operators have officially started activating the new UK-wide Emergency Alerts service, which has been designed to warn mobile users if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (e.g. severe flooding, fires and extreme weather). But it will only work on modern 4G and 5G Smartphones.

Selected customers of UK ISP EE and BT’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages are being invited to take part in a new “Faster Broadband Speeds Trial“, which we suspect will involve the use of Openreach’s new 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps tiers (both offer 120Mbps upstream).

Mobile network operator EE UK has today officially informed us that they’ve launched a refreshed range of Pay As You Go (PAYG) packages, which they claim will offer customers better value and improved data allowances (up to 125GB), with a variety of new customer benefits.

Consultancy firm FarrPoint has today posted the results of a recent survey they conducted alongside the Connecting Cheshire (Digital Cheshire) partnership to measure 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage across the region’s “main transport routes” (i.e. motorways, A and B roads), which reveals a mixed picture of network reach.

Uswitch.com has unveiled the winners of their annual 2023 Telecoms Awards event, which among things saw Plusnet named as the best LARGE broadband ISP of the year, while Hyperoptic took the same award for smaller providers. Meanwhile, BT was named as the most reliable broadband ISP and giffgaff came top for mobile.

Mobile network operator EE UK has quietly introduced an important change to their 4G based Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans, which means that customers who joined from 1st March 2023 will have their mobile broadband speeds capped at just 25Mbps – this is advertised as being “Superfast speeds“.

The National Audit Office has today published an assessment of the progress being made by the UK Government’s 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN), which finds that it continues to be massively over budget and has “fallen further behind schedule“. In fact, not even the Home Office knows when it’ll be ready, but 2029 or later is hinted.

Consumer website Expert Reviews has published the winners of their annual “Best Broadband Awards 2023” event, which has surveyed UK consumers in an effort to identify the best Internet Service Providers (ISP) across a range of categories. Much like last year, the overall winner was named as Plusnet, again.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has introduced a “6 Months Half Price” discount on their 4G and 5G SIM Only plans with unlimited calls, texts and data (mobile broadband), when taken with a 24-month minimum contract term. The offer reduces the price down to just £14 per month (£28 after 6 months).

Ookla, which operates the popular internet Speedtest.net service, has warned that median 5G performance (mobile broadband download speeds) are declining in many early launch markets like the United Kingdom, where speeds fell by -38.26Mbps (Megabits per second) year-on-year.

Consumer broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that their ultrafast 5G based (mobile broadband) network is expanding into more rural parts of the UK, reaching national parks, seasonal hotspots and over 500 smaller towns and villages. They’re also testing new technologies, such as mobile via LEO satellites.

BT (EE) has suspended doorstep selling on the Isle of Wight, which was being conducted on their behalf by a third-party firm ‘Money Expert‘, after rival broadband ISP WightFibre complained that the sellers had allegedly been making some very dishonest claims about the operator.

Ofcom has today set out their “expectations” for how they want mobile operators – Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2 (VMO2 / Virgin Media) – to approach the phased switch-off of legacy 2G and 3G mobile services. The goal being to ensure consumers are “treated fairly” and aren’t left cut-off from vital services.

The BT Group has today published their latest Q3 FY23 results to December 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 9.57 million premises (up by 810k in the quarter vs 805k last quarter) and EE increase their 5G customer based to 8.5 million (up from 8.157m).

Mobile operator EE has announced that they’ve upgraded their new 4G mobile network on the London Underground by enabling the latest ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband connectivity, which will initially only be live across three stations – Archway and Tufnell Park (Northern line), as well as Notting Hill Gate (Central line).
