A new survey of 4,006 UK adults, which was conducted by consumer magazine Which? in July 2020, has found that 36% of mobile customers whose bundled airtime contracts (handset and mobile tariff) have ended in the last 2 months are still overpaying on their bill. This is despite many operators pledging to tackle the practice.

UK ISP EE has this week become the latest internet provider to adopt SOGEA technology (standalone copper broadband), which means that their “fibre broadband” (FTTC and G.fast) packages no longer come with a phone (voice) calls service attached. Just don’t expect to save much money.

Ofcom UK has published their 2020 survey of broadband and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (78%) again, while Three UK were the same for mobile (89%).

The Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL) organisation, which runs the joint network sharing venture between mobile operators EE (BT) and Three UK, has moved to protect 4G and 5G based mobile masts by deploying SmartWater technology to forensically tag vandals who attack their infrastructure.

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has revealed the results from their H1 2020 study of 4G based mobile broadband performance (speeds, latency etc.) in the United Kingdom. Once again EE (BT) remains top of the pack with median average downloads of 21.2Mbps and one-way latency times of 12ms (milliseconds).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has launched a new “BT Sport in a Box” package for their Pay Monthly customers, which costs £45 and includes 3 months’ access to the BTSport TV app with inclusive data, 3 months large screen access and an inclusive Google Chromecast (worth c.£75) “so that they can watch every game on their TV at home.”

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that they’ve just completed the build of their 500th new mobile site, located in Glencoe (Scotland), as part of their contract to roll-out a new 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN). This is on top of the 19,000 existing sites that have already been upgraded for the ESN.

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that their much delayed auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands, which could boost new 5G mobile network coverage and mobile broadband speeds further into the Gigabit (1000Mbps+) territory, will not now take its first bids until January 2021.

BT has today published their Q1 2020/21 results, which reveals that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 5.81 million UK premises (up from 5.4m last quarter) and that includes 2.98m on FTTP (up from 2.57m) and 2.83m on G.fast (up from 2.81m). Plus 5G via EE is now live in 100 cities and towns.

The latest biannual H1 2020 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) performance across the United Kingdom, which was conducted by RootMetrics, has once again named EE (BT) as the best overall operator. On top of that they delivered the fastest median (average) broadband download speed of 42.6Mbps (up from 36.5Mbps).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched “Set Up Safe” for all UK Pay Monthly customers, which is a free new SMS service that is designed to help parents “quickly and easily set up their child’s phone with safety features” (i.e. block adult internet content, set spending caps and stop them adding extra charges to the bill etc.).

Industry regulator Ofcom has today secured new commitments from UK ISPs EE, Plusnet and Sky Broadband to reduce prices automatically for “vulnerable customers” who are out of contract, which mirrors a similar move agreed last year with BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. Savings of £270m are forecast.

Transport for London (TfL) has today awarded Capita the contract to design and roll-out key parts of a new 4G (mobile) based Emergency Services Network (ESN) throughout the London Underground, which will be used by the police, fire, rescue and ambulance teams to communicate during any incidents that may require their attention.

The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (July 2020) from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that only three telecoms companies have made it into the top table – mobile operators Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and giffgaff.

Mobile operator Vodafone’s recent decision to stop selling their femtocell based Sure Signal 3G router on 30th April 2020, while instead encouraging use of Wi-Fi Calling, has one significant flaw. The latter still doesn’t support the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages (it’s been listed as coming “soon” since 2018).

Mobile operator and UK ISP EE has today reintroduced converged pricing on their fixed line ADSL, FTTC and G.fast based home broadband plans, which in simple terms means that the operator’s existing Pay Monthly mobile customers will pay less than somebody who just orders their fixed line service by itself.

EE (BT) and Nokia have announced that, as part of their support for the much delayed UK Emergency Services Network (ESN), they will build the “world’s first” 4G LTE (mobile broadband) based Air-to-Ground communications network to support 300,000 emergency service personnel (range from 500 to 10,000 feet above ground).
