Survey Names Hyperoptic as Fastest UK Broadband ISP for 2020

Comparison site Broadband Genie has today revealed the winners of their broadband speed awards, which covers different categories across standard, superfast and ultrafast connections. Overall Hyperoptic, a full fibre (FTTP/B) ISP that serves apartment blocks, was named the fastest ISP for both downloading and uploading.

Plusnet, Vodafone and EE Stalled Over Automatic Compensation

Ofcom’s automatic compensation system for customers of UK broadband ISPs has now been in operation for almost a full year, but despite that three of the providers that originally pledged their support – Vodafone, Plusnet and EE – have yet to officially join the scheme. But this could be about to change.

Bad news, they’re well behind schedule.

Ofcom Repay £218m to UK Mobile Operators for Overcharging

Ofcom has lost its appeal against last year’s ruling by the UK High Court of Justice (here), which ordered them to repay £218m to mobile operators as part of restitution for their handling of a licence fee hike to the 900MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands (i.e. £82.4m to EE, £54m for Vodafone, £54m for O2 and £26m for Three UK).

EE Mobile Become Exclusive UK Partner for Netflix Rival BritBox

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve become the exclusive partner for the new BritBox video streaming service, which among other things means that customers of their existing Pay Monthly mobile and tablet (4G and 5G) plans will receive a free 6 subscription to the service (starting on 13th March 2020).

Government to Unveil £40m for UK Rural 5G Broadband Pilots

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is today reportedly gearing up to announce a fresh round of new capital investment in major infrastructure projects (HS2 etc.), which is expected to include a pot of £40 million to support pilots of superfast 5G based wireless (mobile) broadband in rural areas.

nPerf Publish 2020 Study of UK Mobile Networks, Vodafone Best

As if we didn’t have enough conflicting studies. French company nPerf has now decided to start publishing an annual study of UK mobile operator (mobile broadband) performance, which is based off crowd-sourced data. Overall the inaugural study finds that Vodafone UK provided the “Best Mobile Internet Performance” in 2019.

New Mobile Operator Zevvle Has a Different Twist on PAYG Data

A new Birmingham-based Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) called Zevvle has launched with a different twist on pay-as-you-go data (mobile broadband) pricing, which is intended to help prevent customers from overpaying for data they don’t use by discounting the price as you consume an increasing amount.

Fight Over Costs Threatens Shared UK Rural Mobile Network

The £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) agreement between BT (EE), Vodafone, Three UK and O2, which aims to extend geographic 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by 2025, could be in doubt after some of the participants expressed concern over high costs. RootMetrics has published their biannual H2 2019 study of mobile network (3G and 4G) performance across the United Kingdom, which once again named EE (BT) as the best overall operator and they also delivered the fastest aggregate median (average) mobile broadband download speed of 36.5Mbps.

Global Wireless Solutions has published the results of their latest “extensive national” study into mobile network (4G etc.) performance across 36 cities, which is one of the few to name O2 as the overall “most reliable network” (followed by EE, Vodafone and Three UK). BT to Create 700+ New UK Apprenticeship and Graduate Jobs

Ofcom Toughens Personal UK Broadband ISP Speed Estimates

Ofcom has today announced that they intend to toughen their existing Broadband Speed Code of Practice, which among other things requires UK ISPs to supply consumers with a personal estimate of their broadband line speed before buying. Under the new change this estimate will become more accurate, but there’s a catch.

Expert Reviews 2020 Awards Name Plusnet as Best UK ISP

An annual survey conducted by Expert Reviews has named UK ISP Plusnet as the “Overall Winner” of their 2020 Best Broadband Awards, although EE (BT) also picked up an award for “Best Customer Service” and Virgin Media came top for “Best Speed.” Sadly TalkTalk came bottom of the customer service table.

BT Bring 100% of Customer Service Calls Back to UK and Ireland

UK ISP BT has today confirmed the completion of their long-running strategy to end the outsourcing of customer support, which previously resulted in related calls being answered in India and the Philippines. Instead 100% of such calls will now be answered in the UK and Ireland, which has completed a year ahead of schedule.

Vodafone Created Most UK Complaints in Q3 2019 – Ofcom Study

Ofcom has today published their latest Q3 2019 consumer complaints report, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for fixed line broadband, home phone and mobile (Pay Monthly) service. Meanwhile Virgin Media took the most flak their Pay TV service.
