Most of the major UK broadband ISPs and mobile network operators have today agreed a set of “important commitments” with Ofcom and Government (DCMS) help to support and protect “vulnerable consumers,” as well as those who may become vulnerable due to circumstances arising from COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Broadband and mobile providers EE (BT) and Virgin Media UK have today posted some interesting snapshots to help illustrate how the current spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is impacting the way their customers make use of internet connectivity, which among other things show a big surge during the Prime Minister’s daily briefings.

Last night’s decision by the UK Government to order the immediate closure of all shops selling “non-essential goods” has begun to hit, with mobile operators Three UK, O2 and BT (EE) all confirming that their high street outlets have been shut and must remain that way until told they can reopen.

Yesterday was an important day for broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom because it was the first working Monday after the mass closure of schools, which has concentrated the demands of both home (remote) working and family internet traffic on to residential connectivity. But as expected the day was busy, albeit uneventful.

Mobile operator EE UK (BT) has once again refreshed their range of Pay-As-You-Go packs, which they say come with “more data than ever before” (i.e. data / broadband allowances up to 60GB) and each one will receive the operator’s “superfast 4G speeds.”

BT (EE) has today become the latest broadband ISP and mobile operator to offer some free extras and support to their customers, which among other things includes changes to help the most vulnerable and ensuring that all of their users can access “unlimited” home broadband (no data caps).

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed some more details about the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN), which aims to extend UK geographic 4G mobile coverage to 95% by the end of 2025, and explained how they will assess the compliance of O2, Vodafone, Three UK and EE (BT) with those commitments.

Customers of O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK – as well as various virtual (MVNO) mobile providers – are today reporting sporadic connectivity problems with making calls, which began at just after 10am today. Some reports have claimed that this issue allegedly stems from an interconnect fault on O2’s network.

As expected Transport for London (TfL) has today announced that their planned trial with O2, Vodafone, Three UK and EE (BT) of a new 4G mobile (mobile broadband) network along the Jubilee Line (platforms and tube trains in tunnels) – between Canning Town and Westminster stations – will go live tomorrow.

The UK telecoms regulator has today finalised their rules for this year’s forthcoming auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands, which hopes to boost new 5G mobile network coverage and mobile broadband speeds further into the Gigabit-capable (1000Mbps+) territory.

Last year’s confession by BT that they had failed to immediately apply Ofcom’s new price cap on UK calls to 118 numbers (Directory Enquiries) until June 2019 (here), which resulted in several thousand of EE’s mobile customers being overcharged, has resulted in the operator being fined £245,000.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today switched-on their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network in a further 21 new cities and large towns across the United Kingdom, including locations such as Bath, Chelmsford, Loughborough and Rochester.

Mobile operators BT (EE), Vodafone, O2 and Three UK have today reached a final agreement on costs to support the Government’s £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) plan, which will work to extend geographic 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025. But one aspect may have been watered down.

The Leeds City Council in Yorkshire has today signed a new £20.3m partnership with BT (Openreach), which will see the latter build a new local “full fibre” network to connect hundreds of schools, NHS and other public sector sites across the city. A new fund will also be setup to support community broadband initiatives.

Comparison site Broadband Genie has today revealed the winners of their broadband speed awards, which covers different categories across standard, superfast and ultrafast connections. Overall Hyperoptic, a full fibre (FTTP/B) ISP that serves apartment blocks, was named the fastest ISP for both downloading and uploading.

Ofcom’s automatic compensation system for customers of UK broadband ISPs has now been in operation for almost a full year, but despite that three of the providers that originally pledged their support – Vodafone, Plusnet and EE – have yet to officially join the scheme. But this could be about to change.

Good news, the Scottish Government‘s £25m 4G Infill Programme, which originally aimed to improve rural mobile coverage (mostly notspots across the Highlands and Islands) by building a network of 45 new masts for UK mobile operators to use (here), has finally built its first mast. Bad news, they’re well behind schedule.
