Telecoms analyst firm Analysys Mason has warned that operators like EE, which will soon launch a new Home Fixed Wireless service using its 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) Mobile Broadband technology to help connect isolated rural areas in the United Kingdom, will face a number of challenges not least with the high cost of mobile data.

Mobile operator and ISP EE (Orange UK and T-Mobile) has published its latest Q3-2013 financial results and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base has continued its slow but steady growth to total 714,000 users (up +10,000 during Q3, the same level as Q2). Meanwhile 4G mobile customers have jumped from 687,000 in Q2 to 1.18 million now.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today confirmed that it will continue to fuel their Virgin Mobile platform, which serves approximately 3 million customers across the United Kingdom, through an extended Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement.

Mobile operator EE UK has announced a series of major new 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based enhancements for November 2013, which include a trial of 300Mbps service speeds in London and the launch of a new superfast “Home Broadband” style product that uses their Mobile Broadband network. Bigger data allowances are also on the way.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has told EE to correct the mobile coverage checker on their website after a T-Mobile consumer complained that the 3G based Mobile Broadband coverage for their postcode was reported by the service as “EXCELLENT“, even though they could not receive any indoor signal and only had a poor service outside.

BT has today moved one step closer to expanding their mobile solutions after it signed an “exclusive” multi-year agreement with EE (Everything Everywhere), which will provide the predominantly fixed line telecoms firm with Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) services.

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today highlighted the latest “independent testing” from the University of Bristol and Farncombe, which appears to show that their new SuperHub wireless broadband router offers better home WiFi performance than BT’s equivalent HomeHub4. An interesting new study from social media analyst WaveMetrix has taken a look at the United Kingdom’s biggest broadband ISPs to discover which gives the best support via Twitter. The study found that good support is about more than being the fastest to reply. Just ask Virgin Media, which wasn’t the fastest like Sky Broadband but still did well.
