EE Expand 4G Mobile Broadband Network to 12 More UK Towns

Thursday, September 26th, 2013 (9:34 am) - Score 630

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has today expanded the coverage of its 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network to an additional 12 towns around the United Kingdom, which takes the total to 117 towns and cities.

The service will today be switched-on in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Beaconsfield, Blackburn, Burton upon Trent, Coalville, Chester-le-Street, Fleet, Gerrards Cross, Halifax, Hinckley, Houghton-le-Spring and Reigate. The network currently covers around 60% of the UK population and should reach 98% by the end of 2014.

Meanwhile EE’s superfast “Double Speed 4GEE” upgrade is available in 20 cities – Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Southampton. More will soon follow.

EE only done Glasgow and Edinburgh and told in shop in Irvine it will take 2 years to get coverage and I thought that 98% was in Scotland itself as England etc. so they better start expanding coverage soon?

I wonder what the logic to the rollout is; I’d have thought our rural area would be one of the last to get this.

And yet, in the last year, we’ve seen Three’s DC-HSPA launched, delivering 20Meg downstream @ 2.7km (which is nine times the average for DSL for the area) and now we have EE 4G available, which I have yet to try.

The cell is in a field in what many would refer to as “the middle of nowhere”.

Perhaps we’re just lucky as the neighbouring town was one of their target areas, so they did the outliers as well.

Not complaining – far from it – I’ll be intrigued to see what speeds it delivers.
