Network operator Colt (Colt Technology Services) recently revealed (here) that their metro fibre optic broadband and Ethernet network has been expanded to reach 7,000 more on-net sites through their long-running partnership with CityFibre, which is deploying a full fibre network across a significant chunk of the UK.

Welsh internet provider Ogi, which is building a multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network for homes and businesses across South Wales, has today published an interesting visualisation of their optical backhaul network that shows all the key fibre links and distances between their key locations (Points of Presence).

Network technology firm Adtran and UK broadband giant BT Group today revealed that they’ve conducted Europe’s “first successful field trial” of optical transport in a live research network, using Adtran’s Coherent 100ZR pluggable transceiver – achieving “high levels of spectral efficiency and low power consumption.”

The national UK telecoms, media and internet regulator, Ofcom, has today begun the early evidence gathering and development phase for their next major review of the UK’s wholesale telecoms market – Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR), which will look to make changes that “promote competition and investment” in gigabit broadband and business connectivity.

The FTTH Council Europe has today published their 2024 ranking of 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP networks, which sees the UK rise several places in the ranking and a prediction that we’ll hit 29.6 million homes passed by 2029 (up from 17.1m today).

The local authority for the Merseyside (England) town of St Helens, which is home to a population of around 103,000, has notified ISPreview of a new digital infrastructure project that aims to invest £2.5m to deploy a fibre optic network to support businesses across the town centre with gigabit-capable broadband.

The estimated contract value is £650m.
