Openreach has today advised us about the forthcoming launch of their new Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) product for ISPs (OSA Filter Connect), which appears to be a Dark Fibre style solution that has been designed to address many of the perceived failings of a “one-size fits all” regulated product.

Nokia says they will become the first to demonstrate a hybrid Wireless Passive Optical Network (PON) solution at the Broadband World Forum in Berlin, which can offer up to 1Gbps broadband speeds to homes by harnessing both an optical fibre network and WiGig’s 60GHz wireless standard (802.11ad).

The European Commission’s (EC) competition regulator has called on the UK Government to defend its business rates regime after an unidentified complainant alleged that the charges, which are managed by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), were being abused to provide “illegal state aid” to BT.

The fallout from AB Internet’s collapse in May 2017 continues to bite. A recent meeting revealed that 1,600 premises on the Isle of Mull (Scotland) will remain disconnected from superfast broadband because the 8 wireless mast that were built cannot be reused by the community due to state aid rules.

Two years ago the London Borough of Wandsworth announced that it had teamed-up with local ISP Community Fibre to roll-out a new 1000Mbps capable ultrafast fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network to 20,000 council homes. The provider has so far done 5,500 and the next areas are now being announced.

Cityfibre has published their latest results for the six months to 30th June 2017 (H1), which reveals that they now have 4,235 connected customer premises on their UK “full fibre” FTTP network (up from 3,962 in H2 2016) and a total of 3,556 route kilometres of operational ducted fibre (up from 3,383km).

The Emtelle Group, which manufactures blown fibre and ducted network solutions for telecommunications providers, has acquired Moore GmbH in Germany. The move forms part of a major €30 million investment by the firm into their manufacturing plants across Europe, which is needed to boost supply.

Fibre optic builder Cityfibre has today announced that the first connections on their new £3.24 million Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband and Ethernet network in Southend-on-Sea have gone live. The deployment in Essex is being supported by business ISP Onecom.
