The Valuation Office Agency‘s imminent “revaluation” of business rates (due to take effect from the 1st April 2017) could do more harm than good to the roll-out of fibre optic broadband, not least by hitting BT and Virgin Media with a £1.3bn tax hike on existing infrastructure over the next 4-5 years.

Around 900 businesses in Colchester (Essex, England) are slowly starting to gain access to a new “ultrafast” (1Gbps+) broadband network, which follows a Dark Fibre roll-out deal that was signed in September 2016 between Colchester Borough Council and an independent network operator.

Last week we reported on the case of four men who had been found guilty of a £160m financing fraud that involved Total Asset Finance (TAF) and H2O Networks Ltd. (here), which was one of the UK’s early FTTH/P network pioneers. The men have now been sentenced to a total of 44 years in jail.

After years of waiting the Southwark Crown Court has found four men guilty of a £160 million financing fraud, which is a case that began in 2010/11 (here) after the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) opened an investigation into one of the UK’s early pioneers of alternative fibre optic broadband networks.

Business ISP Gamma has moved to upgrade their national core network in the United Kingdom by signing a new long-haul Dark Fibre agreement with Cityfibre. The access agreement will connect 15 data centres and exchanges across the country via CityFibre’s long-distance and metro networks.

The remote Inner Hebrides island of Tiree, which sits alongside nearby Coll, has been awarded £80,000 from the Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) programme to help upgrade their local wireless broadband network so that it can offer “superfast” speeds of up to 30Mbps.

The UK Internet Services Providers’ Association (ISPA) has told the Government that if they wish to boost the roll-out of ultrafast “full fibre” FTTP/H broadband networks then the “most important factor” will be to reduce the high costs and admin burden of existing regulatory barriers (wayleaves etc.).

Fibre optic network developer Cityfibre has today published a preliminary trading update for the year to 31st December 2016, which among other things confirms that they have pure fibre networks in 42 UK “cities” and this reflects 3,383km of network assets in use (up from 743km at the end of 2015).
