AAISP Warns UK Government to Fix Costly Broadband Capacity Before Speed

Global Tier 1 network supplier Level 3 Communications has suggested that broadband subscribers in the UK should, if they want to help ISPs invest in and develop better superfast broadband infrastructure, be prepared to pay more for their internet usage. But ISPs must first be willing to make that change.

The House of Lords Select Committee Inquiry into the UK government’s superfast broadband plan has published its first report, which criticises the lack of “strategy” and failure to focus upon “eliminating” the rural digital divide. Crucially it calls for the roll-out of a “robust and resilient national network” that should be linked primarily by open access fibre optic lines; but only if home owners pay for it first.

Ofcom has today proposed new controls that will “lead to [a] real-terms price reduction” of BTWholesale’s Leased Line services, which are used by businesses, mobile operators and broadband ISPs around the UK.
