Kensington and Chelsea UK Reverse Earlier Refusal of BT FTTC Cabinets

It’s back on. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London (England) has finally resolved last year’s dispute over street cabinet placement with BT (here), which saw the operator withdraw from plans to make superfast broadband (FTTC) ISP services available to 34,200 premises in the area.

BT Sign £24.6m Deal to Rollout Superfast Broadband in Shropshire UK

The Shropshire County Council (SCC) and BT have today signed a new £24.6 million deal that will make superfast broadband speeds of up to 80Mbps (FTTC/P) available to 93% of local homes and businesses (helping 130,000 premises) by the end of Spring 2016 (excludes the Telford & Wrekin Council area).

BT Sign £146m Deal to Rollout FTTC Broadband in the Highlands and Islands

It’s been a long time coming but Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has finally signed its “most ambitious” contract worth £146 million with BT, which will make superfast broadband (FTTC/P) ISP services available to 84% of premises in the Highlands and Islands by the end of 2016.

BT Sign GBP13.8m Deal to Deploy Superfast Broadband in Hampshire UK

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) has today signed a state aid supported £13.8m contract with BT to make super-fast broadband (24Mbps+) ISP connectivity available to “at least” 90% of all local premises by the end of 2015 (i.e. around 57,000 homes and businesses in the county).

The Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) has announced the first areas to benefit from its state aid supported project with neighbouring Herefordshire, which aims to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services available 90% of homes and businesses in both English (UK) counties by the end of 2016 and 100% by 2018.

BT Starts Delayed Deployment of Superfast Broadband in Lancashire UK

The Lancashire County Council (LCC) has confirmed that its state aid supported project with BT, which aims to roll-out superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP services to 97% of local homes and businesses, has finally got underway with the first areas being announced. Sadly the end date has also been put back by around one year.

Binfield Heath UK Locals Raise £60k to Help BT Install FTTC Broadband

Residents of the isolated Binfield Heath village in Oxfordshire (England) have clubbed together to raise £60,000 in order to help cover some of BT’s costs for rolling out superfast broadband (FTTC) technology in the area, which currently suffers from internet download speeds of just 1Mbps or less.

The Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) has today signed a new £16.26 million contract with BT that will provide “world class fibre broadband speeds” to 53,000 local homes and businesses. Sadly the final time-scales, speeds and targets seem to be unclear.

Point Topic Claim Residential Demand for 1Gbps Fibre Broadband is Low

A new study from telecoms analyst Point Topic UK has suggested that there is a ceiling to the broadband speeds that residential consumers are prepared to pay for, with hybrid-fibre (e.g. FTTC, FTTN) solutions tending to dominate the “superfast” market and demand for “bandwidths of a gigabit” being “relatively low“.

BT Help 88 Percent of Lincolnshire UK to Get Superfast Broadband by 2016

BT and the Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) have today announced details of how they intend to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) available to “at least” 88% of all homes and businesses in the English East Midlands county by April 2016 (everybody else will get speeds of at least 2Mbps).

UPD Why Fibre Based Broadband Internet Access is Not Always Superfast

Just because your local authority has promised to cover 98% of homes and businesses with “fibre-based broadband” does not mean that you’re going to get a superfast broadband (25Mbps+) speed and, according to at least one council, you might only get downloads from upwards of 2Mbps.

Cornwall UK Expands Superfast Broadband Coverage Target to 95%

The joint public and privately funded £132m Superfast Cornwall scheme, which originally aimed to deploy BT fibre optic (FTTC etc.) based broadband ISP services to “at least” 80% of homes and businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by the end of 2014, has now expanded its target to cover 95%.

ISP PlusNet UK Offer 6 Months Half Price FTTC Fibre Broadband and Phone

Internet provider PlusNet UK has today launched a new promotion that offers their FTTC based unlimited superfast broadband (up to 80Mbps) and phone bundles at half price for the first six months of service, which means that the entry-level package costs from just £7.99 a month.

BT Disguise UK Superfast Broadband Street Cabinets with Vinyl Wraps

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national telecoms network in the United Kingdom, appears to have found a new way of using customised Vinyl Wraps to help camouflage some of their superfast broadband (FTTC) street cabinets.

UPD 98% of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough UK Get BT Fibre Broadband

BT has officially signed the £45 million Connecting Cambridgeshire contract, which aims to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services available to 90% of homes and businesses across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough (England, UK) by the end of 2015 (i.e. 98% will get FTTC but the 8% difference will be sub-25Mbps).
