Ofcom’s proposal to force Openreach (BT) into significantly cutting the wholesale price of their ‘up to’ 40Mbps (10Mbps upload) FTTC “fibre broadband” product for ISPs has been dealt a blow after the Government warned it would “disincentivise investment” in new “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has today further reduced the special offer pricing of their ‘up to’ 17Mbps “Fast Broadband” and ‘up to’ 38Mbps “Faster Fibre” (FTTC) broadband and phone bundles for new customers, which also continue to benefit from no setup fee. The discount will last until 2nd November 2017.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they are to conduct a second Proof of Concept (PoC) trial of “Spectrum Refarming” technology, which in theory could result in a boost to broadband speeds by allowing different technologies (e.g. FTTC / VDSL2 and G.fast) to share the same spectrum frequency.

UK ISP Plusnet has launched a new promotion that cuts the price of their unlimited ‘up to’ 38Mbps (FTTC) “fibre broadband” and phone line rental bundle from £33.98 to just £22.99 a month for the first 18 months of service (new customers). The £25 one-off action fee has also been removed.

Canadian firm Genesis Technical Systems, which last month got their “last mile” mBond kit approved for use on Openreach’s hybrid fibre FTTC (VDSL2) broadband network in the UK (here), has now secured their first orders from Hertfordshire based ISP Next Generation Access (NGA).

Last month WarwickNet became the first alternative network ISP to launch a 500Mbps capable G.fast hybrid fibre “ultrafast broadband” service for businesses via their own street cabinets (here), which would be well above Openreach’s 330Mbps peak. Today we have some new details to share.

East Yorkshire ISP KCOM has today announced the final 2017 phase of their £60m Lightstream project, which aims to have deployed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) dominated “ultrafast broadband” network to a further 11,555 premises in Hull between now and the end of the year.

BT recently held another one of their periodic meetings with ISPs from across the United Kingdom, which among other things revealed the latest roll-out progress for G.fast and FTTP “ultrafast broadband” tech, as well as a trial of Qube engineer visits and the status of their 21CN upgrades.

Existing customers of BT’s 52Mbps (9.5Mbps upload) capable Infinity 1 (FTTC) “fibre broadband” service will be pleased to learn that the ISP has decided to reward them with a free speed boost ‘up to’ 76Mbps (19Mbps upload) and a doubling of their cloud storage, but not everybody will benefit.

Alternative network provider WarwickNet (CableCom) has today stolen a march on Openreach (BT) by upgrading their own street cabinets to support the latest hybrid-fibre G.fast broadband services with ultrafast download speeds of ‘up to’ 500Mbps (well above Openreach’s 330Mbps peak).

The Essex County Council (ECC) in England has unveiled details of their final Phase 4 contract under the Superfast Essex project, which could be supported by up to £29 million of public investment and aims to reach “near” to 100% coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) by 2021.

Canadian firm Genesis Technical Systems (GTS) has managed to get their long-gestating mBond technology through BT’s Modem Conformance Testing (MCT) for the SIN498 standard, which means that their bonded copper broadband line kit can be used on Openreach’s FTTC (VDSL2) network.

Internet provider Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has attempted to spoof modern advertising practices and Sky Broadband’s recent offer of a 55Mbps “Minimum Speed Guarantee” by proposing to go one further with a 56Mbps guarantee. Naturally they’re quick to explain the caveats.
