UK ISP BT has officially launched their annual round of super discounted “Black Friday” broadband bundles, which tend to represent some of the cheapest price points you’re likely to see all year. On top of that they’ve also thrown in 18 months of free BT Sport TV access for new customers.

Openreach’s (BT) Modem Conformance Testing (MCT), which ensures that a router / modem device is approved for use on their hybrid fibre (FTTC) UK broadband network, needs to become much more accessible and transparent for consumers. Unapproved kit can also carry the risk of disconnection.

UK Internet provider TalkTalk has today published their interim results for the 6 months to 30th September 2017 (H1 2018), which reveals that they added +46,000 new on-net broadband subscribers in the period to total 3,993,000 (29% of those use their FTTC/H “fibre broadband” network).

Vodafone has published their latest Q3 2017 (calendar) results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow by +33,000 in the quarter to total 278,000 (better than the +29K added in Q2). Meanwhile 4G Mobile coverage (population) has reached 97% of the UK and they’ve cut their FTTC prices.

The so-called “Black Friday” bonanza of discounting is beginning to get under way. Sky Broadband have been one of the first to jump by significantly cutting the monthly prices and setups fee of their unlimited broadband and superfast “fibre” (FTTC) bundles for new customers.

UK ISP BT has cut the price of their ‘up to’ 76Mbps Unlimited Infinity 2 (FTTC) broadband and phone bundle, which has been reduced from the previous offer of £49.99 a month for 18 months to just £39.99 for new customers (£56.49 thereafter). They’ve also added a £150 Reward Mastercard.

The Cambridgeshire County Council has announced the completion of their Phase 2 Broadband Delivery UK contract with Openreach (BT), which has successfully expanded the coverage of FTTC/P based fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 95% of local premises by the end of 2017.

Openreach (BT) has started a new Proof of Concept (PoC) to test the application of “low level error correction” on new Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband lines, which they hope could result in fewer customers raising fault reports.

The BT Group has published their latest results for Q3 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base add 22K subscribers to total 9,307,000 (up from 19K in Q2 vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.285 million “fibre broadband” FTTC/P users (up by 179K vs 170K in Q2 and 211K in Q1).

Budget UK ISP Direct Save Telecom has today launched a new range of consumer packages for standard broadband and superfast “fibre” (FTTC), which they claim will enable them to maintain their position as the “UK’s lowest priced broadband and telecom provider.“

The internet provider division of high street retailer John Lewis has followed their special offer from August by making a further discount to the price of their superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) and phone line rental bundles, which will last for the first 12 months of service.

Recent talks held between Openreach and ISPs appear to have today resulted in the decision to introduce new wholesale pricing and 12 month contracts for their FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) ultrafast broadband products, which can be installed in areas where FTTP isn’t currently available.

After unceremoniously cutting the upload speeds of their ‘Unlimited Fibre‘ (up to 38Mbps FTTC download) broadband package from 19.5Mbps to just 1.9Mbps in 2015 (here), Plusnet has now decided to boost their upstream speeds part of the way back ‘up to’ 9.5Mbps.

Last month we revealed that Openreach were preparing to test a ‘Proof of Concept’ upgrade that could boost the performance of ECI based FTTC (VDSL2) “fibre broadband” lines by adopting a default target downstream noise margin of 3dB (here). However the plan for this test has now been paused.

A reinvestment of £6 million into the on-going Broadband East Riding project in Yorkshire (England) will enable Openreach (BT) to extend their existing FTTC, FTTP and FTTRN rollout of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) in the region to an additional 2,200 homes and businesses.

Mobile and internet provider EE has today launched a second ‘up to’ 76Mbps (FTTC / VDSL2) capable home broadband package called ‘Fibre Max‘, which includes anytime UK + international calls (usually +£10 extra) and a number of additional calling features into the bundle.

Several ISPs, including Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Hyperoptic and Gigaclear, are reported to be considering a possible legal challenge if the Government chooses to adopt BT’s voluntary proposal to deliver a 10Mbps minimum broadband speed across the UK by 2020.
