The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has published some of the responses they’ve received from fixed broadband ISPs and mobile operators to their consultation on enhancing network resilience in order to “reduce the risk of network outages“ (here). Suffice to say that many operators are balking at the costs of deploying national battery backup.

The latest research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 1.22% (17.55 million) in Q1 2024 (down from 1.6% in Q3 2023) to end the quarter on a total of 1.45 billion connections. But the subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks in the UK jumped to 7.2% (up from 1.5% in Q3).

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has posted an interesting new analysis of broadband affordability in the UK, which identifies the cheapest and most expensive ISPs for “entry level” packages by nationwide “small areas“. Suffice to say that alternative networks dominate the table of cheapest providers.

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q1 FY25 financial results, which reveals that their fixed broadband base grew again to total 1.427 million customers (up by 44k in Q1 vs 52k in the Q4 FY24) and their mobile base fell a bit to total 18.567 million (down by -71k in Q1 vs +66k in Q4 FY24).

Openreach (BT) has today released the next batch of 92 exchanges (Tranche 17) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre and will thus stop selling copper based analogue phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

The BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker, which is really intended for network operators and ISPs but has always been used by savvy consumers to check the status of BTW and Openreach based services, appears to have recently made a change that seems to stop displaying ADSL results in areas where VDSL or FTTP (or both) are present.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs that they’re launching a new ‘Prove Telecare’ trial (SVR – Site Visit Reason), which is designed to help UK consumers with old analogue based phone (PSTN / WLR) and Telecare systems to safely migrate to modern broadband (FTTP and FTTC / SOGEA) connections with IP phone (VoIP) services.

The European Commission has this week published their annual 2024 ‘Broadband Coverage in Europe’ study, which reveals how the EU’s fixed gigabit broadband and 5G mobile networks compare across all of its 27 countries, plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Network benchmarking firm MedUX has today published the results of a new study, which examined the fixed broadband performance and quality of three major UK ISPs – BT, Sky Broadband and Vodafone. Overall, BT ended up topping the rankings, but it’s unclear why they left out TalkTalk and Virgin Media, both of which are bigger than Vodafone.

New and existing customers of UK internet provider File Sanctuary, which sells FTTP, G.fast (SOGFast) and FTTC (SOGEA) broadband packages via Openreach, may like to know that the ISP has just expanded their line-up of discounted routers, which now includes the FRITZ!Box 7690, FRITZ!Box 7530 AX routers, the FRITZ!Repeater 3000 AX, and the FRITZ!Fon C6.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has this morning launched a new internet security service for their Pro II home broadband packages “at no extra cost“, called ‘Secure Net Home’, which is a combination of digital security and parental controls (filtering) that can be used on more than 150 connected devices in the home.

New customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband, including NOW Broadband (NOW TV), should be aware that the provider(s) will today be changing from 18-month terms and adopting longer 24-month minimum contract terms across all of their broadband, TV and triple play packages.

Customers of Sky’s sibling NOW Broadband ISP sub-brand, which is best known for its associated NOW TV streaming service, should take note that the provider has today launched a new 75Mbps Full Fibre (FTTP) tier via Openreach’s network and will now only sell new packages via Sky’s website (i.e. NOW no longer has their own order system).

Sky’s sibling NOW Broadband (NOW TV) sub-brand has notified existing internet and phone customers of an imminent price increase, which will be introduced from 5th July 2024 and bump their package prices by an extra £3 per month (£36 per year). This is only slightly lower than last year’s £3.50 hike.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY24 financial results, which saw their fixed broadband base grow to total 1.383 million customers (up by 52k in Q4 vs 39k in the Q3) and their mobile base reach a total of 18.638 million (up by 66k in Q4 vs 330k in Q3).

Internet provider Sky Broadband has responded to this week’s introduction of the government’s new network security laws (here), by emailing customers with older routers to warn them that their kit “no longer receives service and security updates.” The good news is that those who receive these letters might be in line for a free upgrade.
