Internet provider BT has introduced a discount that cuts the cost of their standard (up to 17Mbps) unlimited broadband package to just £4.50 per month for 12 months, while their superfast (up to 52Mbps) Unlimited Infinity 1 service is now reduced to £9.50 and 76Mbps Infinity 2 to £25.

The non-profit Scottish Rural Action group has published a new report that points to “serious failings” in Scotland’s existing roll-out of “superfast broadband” services with BT and calls for 5 major policy changes, which they say would establish an “ultrafast” (300Mbps+) model for rural areas.

UK ISP WarwickNet has followed yesterday’s news for Coventry (here) by announcing that their 100Mbps+ capable Leased Line, FTTP and FTTC broadband network is being expanded to connect businesses around 10 new Street Cabinets in Northamptonshire (England).

The Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC) in England has finally revealed their Phase 2 roll-out plan for expanding the availability of “superfast broadband” (24-30Mbps+) in the county, which will work with Openreach (BT) to reach “up to” 11,000 additional premises and achieve 95% coverage by June 2018.

The state aid supported Superfast Dorset project in England has revealed that a combination of roll-out savings and strong take-up (clawback) have resulted in an extra 800+ premises in 31 areas being added to 2017’s local roll-out plan for Openreach’s (BT) FTTC/P based “fibre broadband” network.

New consumers wishing to take Sky Broadband’s unlimited and FTTC based ‘up to’ 76Mbps (19Mbps upload) Sky Fibre Max service may like to know that the ISP has cut its price to just £15 per month for the first 12 months of service (£25 thereafter), but you also have to pay £17.40 a month line rental on top.

The spread of “ultra-fast” pure fibre optic broadband connections (FTTP/H) across the United Kingdom appears to have accelerated over the past year, with the latest estimate of premises passed delivering a total of 779,006 (up from 351,642 last year) and it’s set to reach around 4 million by 2020.

Openreach (BT) engineers appear to have scored a small PR coup by connecting the CLA, which represents 33,000 rural land owners from across England and Wales and often campaigns for better rural broadband (partly by criticising BT’s effort), to their superfast broadband capable FTTC service.

A new report from Audit Scotland, which works to ensure that public money in Scotland is spent correctly, has found that the £410m Digital Scotland roll-out programme with BT has achieved its initial coverage target. But delivering 95% “fibre broadband” coverage by December 2017 “will be more challenging.”

Internet provider TalkTalk has begun offering their ‘up to’ 38Mbps capable “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) package at half price for its entire contract term (£8.75 per month instead of £17.50), but don’t forget to add line rental from the equivalent of £15.93 a month when pre-paid for 1 year (£17.70 as standard).

The Superfast Worcestershire (England) project appears to have successfully completed its original contract with Openreach (BT), which has now extended their FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network to 90% of the county (i.e. 94% “fibre” coverage inc. sub-24Mbps areas).

Openreach (BT) has today published new technical details for their on-going trials of fixed line “Long Reach VDSL” (FTTC) broadband technology, which could be used to deliver the future 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation and possibly even to expand the availability of “superfast” (24Mbps+) speeds.
