Telecoms operator Vodafone today claims to have become one of the first major ISPs to “abolish” the £18 per month phone line rental charge from their FTTC based superfast home “fibre broadband” bundles, although strictly speaking it’s just being merged into a single low-price.

East Yorkshire telecoms operator KCOM has today unveiled the next phase of their “Lightstream” fibre optic (FTTP/C) broadband network roll-out, which will reach more than 6,500 homes and businesses in Hull’s Willerby Road and surrounding streets later this year.

UK ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) has decided to make their ‘up to’ 80Mbps (20Mbps upload) capable FTTC broadband product the standard for all Home VDSL connections and at the same price point as their old ‘up to’ 40Mbps (10Mbps) VDSL service (i.e. no extra cost for 80Mbps).

Customers of PlusNet’s superfast Fibre Broadband (FTTC) packages, specifically their legacy ‘up to’ 38Mbps (20Mbps upload) subscribers, have been left in a state of frustration after the ISP’s plan to upgrade them on to the new ‘up to’ 52Mbps (10Mbps upload) tier didn’t go quite according to plan.

The £12m+ Central Bedfordshire Broadband project in England claims to have completed its first Phase 1 contract with Openreach (BT), which has so far expanded the availability of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to around 90% of the region and benefited an additional 16,422 premises.

The Government’s Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) has shared with us an interesting summary of queries received and their responses to them for the newly proposed Broadband Investment Fund (BIF), which aims to help alternative network ISPs to secure funds for building new “ultra-fast” (100Mbps+) broadband infrastructure.

UK ISP Plusnet has started offering their top ‘up to’ 76Mbps FTTC “Unlimited Fibre Extra” broadband service at £5 per month for the first six months (£19.99 thereafter). On top of that their standard ‘up to’ 17Mbps product is now free for the first 12 months and includes £50 Cashback.

BT has published their latest quarterly results (calendar Q2 2016), which saw their total base of retail broadband customers top 9,117,000 (up by +76K in Q2 vs 1.045m in Q1) and 4,257,000 of those make use of their FTTC/P based Infinity superfast broadband service (up by +181K vs +214k in Q1).

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England, which is working with Openreach (BT) to make superfast broadband (30Mbps+) services available to around 91% of local premises by June 2017, has put forward a revised Phase 3 roll-out plan that could extend local coverage to nearly 96% by mid-2019.

The Guardians Gate Residents Association (GGRA), which represents new build homes on the ‘Guardians Gate’ development in Milton (Portsmouth), has said that it is “angry and frustrated” over the failure of Openreach (BT) and property developer Bellway to roll-out superfast broadband.

A new contract worth £5 million has been signed with Openreach (BT) to expand the operator’s roll-out of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services, which will cover another 10,000 homes and businesses in the city of Leicester (Leicestershire, East Midlands of England) over the next 2 years.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today issued a Q2 2016 (calendar) trading update, which confirms that they lost another 9,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter (est. total 3,987,000) and their joint 940Mbps FTTH network roll-out with Sky and Cityfibre in the City of York (England) has covered 11,000 premises.

The Merseyside Connected project, which since 2013 has been working with Openreach (BT) to expand “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 98% of local homes and businesses in Merseyside by the end of July 2016 (note: 90% covered by 24Mbps+ speeds), now looks set to complete its contract in September 2016.

A new partnership between Openreach (BT) and Beddington’s Business Improvement District (BID) team will result in around 190 businesses within the industrial area of Croydon (London) gaining access to an ‘up to’ 80Mbps Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband service.

The South Gloucestershire Council in England has confirmed that an extra investment of £1.49m is being made into their Phase 2 Superfast Extension Programme, which will work with BT (Openreach) to expand FTTC/P based superfast broadband (24Mbps+) to 95-97% of the region by Dec 2017.

The £34m Digital Durham project in North East England, which includes Gateshead, the Tees Valley and Sunderland, claims to have completed its original goal of ensuring that 98% of local premises are covered by a “fibre broadband” network (96% able to receive “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+).
