As predicted yesterday BT has today announced a new roll-out plan for delivering faster broadband (at least 5-10Mbps) connections to the hardest to reach final 5% of premises in the United Kingdom (mostly rural homes) and an aim to push “ultrafast” 300-500Mbps G.fast to 10 million premises.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has reduced the cost of their ‘up to’ 38Mbps (2Mbps upload) capable unlimited “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) service to just £5 a month for the first 6 months of service and then £10 per month for 12 months (£15 thereafter). A free connection and £50 Love2shop voucher are also included.

Ultrafast Fibre Optic FTTH Broadband Services Cover 351,000 UK Premises

The latest information on the availability of true ultrafast fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) services, most of which are capable of delivering Gigabit class speeds (1000Mbps), has estimated that some 351,642 premises in the United Kingdom are now within reach of such a service (up from 251,522 last year).

After 20 months of waiting BT finally appears to be progressing its pledge to spend £50m on expanding the commercial roll-out of superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P/B + FTTrN) services to 400,000 extra premises in UK cities, with the first to benefit being in London (Kensington, Chelsea and Tech City etc.).

The Superfast North Yorkshire project has revealed that a further £21m is to be spent on expanding superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to 95% of local premises across the county. As a result discussions are now taking place with BT in order to “draw up contracts for the start of phase three“.

SMEs to See Median Broadband Speed Demand of Just 8.1Mbps by 2025

The Broadband Stakeholders Group, which advises the Government on broadband matters, has published a new report that aims to predict the future requirements of small UK businesses (SMEs). The conclusion finds that SMEs will see median downstream demand rise from 5Mbps in 2015 to just 8.1Mbps by 2025, but the overall picture is more complex.

BT has cut the cost of their unlimited standard (up to 17Mbps ADSL2+) and superfast (up to 38Mbps FTTC Infinity) broadband packages to just £5 and £10 per month respectively for the first 12 months of service, plus they’ve also reintroduced Sainsbury’s shopping vouchers worth £75 and £125 respectively.

BT Openreach – No Plans for ADSL2 Broadband from Street Cabinets

Last year BTOpenreach revealed an interesting new technology that would have enabled them to deploy ADSL2+ (up to 20Mbps) broadband directly from FTTC street cabinets instead of telephone exchanges (here), which could push faster speeds to the most remote premises. But sadly there are no plans to deploy it.

The deployment date has also been brought forward by a year.
