Israel-based Sckipio has made several announcements at the start of this week’s Broadband World Forum event, not least with their ability to squeeze a broadband speed of 2000Mbps out of the new G.fast (ITU G.9701) technology that BT are also preparing to roll-out. But there’s a catch.

The £1.5m Aylesbury Vale Broadband project, which is currently deploying an ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to the rural Buckinghamshire (England) villages of North Marston and Granborough, has announced that their first customers will go live next month.

The Connected Counties project has announced that it will bring forward the start of their Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract in Hertfordshire by six months, which means that BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network should reach 98% coverage by June 2018 instead of 2019.

Telecoms operator Vodafone has today announced that their new fixed line home broadband and phone packages, which were initially launched with limited coverage, have now become available to customers in any of 22 million premises across the United Kingdom.

The price of BT’s top ‘up to’ 76Mbps capable unlimited BTInfinity 2 (FTTC) superfast broadband package has quietly been reduced from £30 to £25 per month for new customers, at least until 14th October 2015. A £100 Sainsbury’s gift card is also accompanying the new deal.

The Kenton Group, which supplies specialist network access services to ISPs and others, has today announced the launch of its new Velocity Lite “ultrafast” broadband solution that offers speeds of up to 320Mbps over bonded FTTC lines.

A recent update from BTWholesale suggests that the newly proposed SoGEA (Naked VDSL) product, which would give you the ability to order a standalone superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) line without also having to pay a separate fee for the phone service, might not see a commercial launch until late 2017.

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband project in England has revealed a roll-out plan (locations and time-scales) for their new extension contract with BT, which will push superfast broadband (24Mbps+) out to another 34,500 premises (“at least” 95% of the local population) by “mid 2019 or earlier“.

The Managing Director of Cardiff-based ISP Spectrum Internet, Giles Phelps, has told ISPreview.co.uk as part our exclusive interview that the Government’s roll-out of superfast broadband is “about 5 years too late” and that future projects should focus on ultra-fast FTTH/P broadband with fixed wireless for remote rural areas.

BT has today reintroduced their earlier summer discounts, which means that unlimited standard (up to 17Mbps) and superfast (up to 38Mbps BTInfinity) broadband packages have been cut to just £5 and £10 per month respectively. Sainsbury’s shopping vouchers worth up to £125 have also been added.

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru project has today announced that they’ve helped to put an additional 504,352 premises within reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, which equates to coverage of 79% across Wales.

Low cost ISP TalkTalk will today reduce the cost of their ‘up to’ 38Mbps capable unlimited “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) package to just £5 per month for the entire 18 month contract term (£17.50 per month thereafter). A free connection and “Super Router” are also included.

Analyst firm IDATE recently updated its World FTTx Database, which provides for an interesting snapshot of the different fixed line technologies that countries around the world are using for “superfast broadband“. Suffice to say that Europe and the UK love hybrid-fibre (VDSL / FTTC).

Earlier this week BT announced plans to make a minimum broadband speed of 5-10Mbps universally available by around 2020 (here) and one part of that involved the use of Long Reach VDSL2 (FTTC), which could help bring “higher speed broadband to hard-to-reach communities“.
