The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK programme, which aims to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services available to 90% of the population by 2016 and 95% by 2017, has so far helped to put related connections within reach of 2.5 million additional homes and businesses (premises passed).

Last week we confirmed that the Connected Counties project for Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire in England had signed a new contract with BT to extend the reach of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity beyond the current target of 90% (April 2016). Today we have the first solid details concerning the roll-out plan.

Apparently BT is having to draw up an urgent plan to tackle broadband capacity problems on the remote Shetland Islands, which resides off the northern coast of Scotland. Locals have reportedly noticed a huge fall in their Internet speeds after the operator’s first “fibre broadband” (FTTC) connections went live last year.

UK ISP TalkTalk has posted their latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar), which revealed that the provider added +47k broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 4,283,000 (sharply up from +15k added in Q4 2014). But there’s bad news for some of the recent off-net (BT based) broadband customer gains from Virgin Media and Tesco.

After a small delay BTOpenreach has this week started to trial a fix for the latency and performance problems that were created on some superfast broadband Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines following the recent introduction of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP – ITU G.998.4) technology.

According to BT about 1 in 3 premises (homes and businesses) on the Isles of Scilly are now connected to the operators new “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which was only installed on the island community some six months ago as part of the wider EU backed £132m Superfast Cornwall project.

The Onlincolnshire project in the East Midlands of England, which is currently working with BT to roll-out FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services to “at least” 89% of all premises in the county by April 2016, appears to have briefly hit a snag with a small EU funding shortfall.

In a controversial twist the Government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has called on a superfast broadband project in Rothbury (Northumberland), which received a slice of state aid, to repay any benefits derived from claw-back (as opposed to reinvesting into better coverage).

The national UK telecoms operator, BT, has today published the latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar) and confirmed that their retail business added +121,000 new broadband subscribers in the quarter (up from +119k in Q4 2014) to total 7,713,000, which includes 3,010,000 on BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +266k vs +209k in Q4 2014).

Ordinarily the news that BT is bringing fibre optic broadband (FTTC/P) cables to your area would be welcome. But it’s not always so and sometimes the use of public money to help upgrade the smallest of UK rural areas, especially when a “superfast” (24Mbps+) capable provider is already serving local customers, can raise concerns.

The county of Hampshire in England can celebrate after it recently became the latest Broadband Delivery UK based Government programme with BT to complete its target of ensuring that 90% of homes and businesses can access “superfast” Internet download speeds of 24Mbps+ by the end of 2015.

Back in March we reported that BTOpenreach’s roll-out of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP – ITU G.998.4) technology, which can improve the performance of their ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines, had hit a few snags (here) with some customers losing performance, connectivity and or suffering higher latency.

It’s been around two years since we first heard of PlusNet’s plan to launch a YouView (IPTV) based TV service for their broadband customers, yet the good news is that the official product “will be launching soon“. But it will only be available to their “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) subscribers.
