The state aid fuelled Superfast Cymru project, which is currently working with BT to make “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity available to 96% of Wales by the end of 2016, has signed a new deal that will extend the service to another 42,000 homes and businesses by June 2017. Also.. Fibre on Demand (FTTPoD) is coming back!

Residents and businesses living in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides have finally benefitted from the on-going BT and Digital Scotland project, which has successfully deployed “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC) services to 3,600 premises in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis.

New research claims that the first Superfast Cornwall contract, which recently completed and expanded the reach of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to 95% of premises in the English county (up from the original target of 80%), has so far delivered a local economic benefit worth £186.1m.

A small but mildly comical change has been made in the Government’s publicity drive for the Broadband Delivery UK project. Somebody somewhere finally recognised that those big red and white “speed limit” signs, which are often used to highlight the top speed of 80Mbps for FTTC “fibre broadband” lines, needed an “up to” prefix.

The Cumbria County Council in England has today signed a new Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract that will extend the reach of BT’s superfast broadband services to several thousand additional homes and businesses in the area.

The West Sussex Better Connected scheme in England, which is working with BT to expand the coverage of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to around 98% of local homes and businesses by Spring 2016 (90% will get “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+), has signed a new deal that will extend this to another 3,000+ premises by the end of 2017.

The Superfast West Yorkshire project in England, which is aiming to roll-out BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to 97% of local homes and businesses by the end of September 2015 (708,000 total premises), has signed a new £13m deal to extend this to another 28,000 premises.

The second round of contracts for the Government’s Superfast Extension Programme (SEP), which is designed to push UK coverage of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services from 90% in early 2016 to 95% by the end of 2017, has in some cases struggled to reach a deal with BT and the latest contract to fall foul is for Devon and Somerset in England.

UK ISP Sky Broadband will later today enhance their on-going offer of 6 months half-price Sky Fibre Unlimited (up to 38Mbps FTTC), which reduces the monthly cost from £20 to £10 per month, by removing the £30 one-off activation fee for existing customers who want to upgrade.

The word went out this morning that the standard price of BT’s superfast broadband (up to 76Mbps) BTInfinity Option 2 (FTTC) package has increased by +£2 to £30 per month, which is in addition to the cost of Phone Line Rental from £16.99 per month (or £15.29 if you pre-pay for a year in advance).

The Broadband East Riding project in Yorkshire (England) has signed a new Superfast Extension Programme contract with the government’s Broadband Delivery UK office, which should help the area to meet the goal of putting superfast broadband (24Mbps+) within reach of 95% by 2017.

The Herefordshire County Council are working to deliver an alternative “ultrafast broadband” solution to help businesses within the Hereford Enterprise Zone at Rotherwas, which can already receive expensive leased lines or cheaper FTTC connectivity from BT; but apparently neither of those are good enough.

The deputy leader of Shropshire County Council in England, Steve Charmley, has taken the unusual step of published an Open Letter in order to “dispel some of the myths perpetrated by detractors” of the local Connecting Shropshire project, which is working with BT to roll-out “fibre broadband” services.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has today launched a “major drive” to boost broadband connectivity in the capital, although it’s mostly the same stuff as we saw being announced last year. At least there’s now a map to depict just how bad the situation is, especially in the city centre.

New customers who sign-up to PlusNet’s superfast broadband (FTTC) capable packages should note that the operator has reduced some of their standard prices for the first 6 months of service and, much more strangely, dropped the upload speed of their “Unlimited Fibre” option from 19.5Mbps to just 2Mbps.
